Jeep Renegade (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Capable of proper off-roading | Uninspired to drive on Tarmac |
| Roomy cabin | Reliability concerns |
| Eye-catching appearance | Disappointing score in Euro NCAP safety tests |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Renegade is the smallest vehicle in Jeep's UK line-up and a compact SUV that competes with the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, Mini Countryman, Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona. Its distinctive chunky appearance immediately channels classic Jeep styling with its seven-slot grille and beefy stance, making it look capable of serious off-road adventures. Inside, there's plenty of headroom for taller adults, though rear legroom is somewhat cramped. Boot space is acceptable rather than remarkable, though some models offer a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat for improved practicality.
On the road, the Renegade is reasonable but uninspired, with artificial steering and a slightly firm ride. A 2018 facelift introduced new turbocharged and naturally aspirated petrol engines alongside updated diesel options, along with improved infotainment featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, serious concerns exist around reliability and safety—the Renegade was retested by Euro NCAP in 2019 and scored just three stars, down from five, with poor marks for active safety systems. Service intervals are fairly close, with costs around £170 for minor services and £400 for major services at main dealers.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, those wanting a roomy compact SUV, and drivers who value the Jeep brand heritage.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising on-road driving dynamics, buyers concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or those seeking the most cost-effective compact SUV option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.3% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Renegade if: You value distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, seek a roomy compact SUV, or prioritise Jeep brand heritage and character.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road driving dynamics, are concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or seek the most cost-effective compact SUV option.
Competitive Position: The Jeep Renegade holds its own in the competitive compact SUV segment, offering distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability that rivals cannot match. However, it falls short compared to the Renault Captur, which scores higher across expert and user ratings, and the Nissan Juke, which offers comparable value. The Fiat 500X, sharing the Renegade's mechanical platform, boasts superior user ratings. The Renegade's reliability concerns and disappointing Euro NCAP safety scores are significant drawbacks, making thorough inspection and testing essential before purchase. For those willing to overlook these issues, the Renegade delivers character and practicality at a reasonable price point.

4.3 Overall rating
(4 reviews)I love the Jeep renegade its a fantastic little workhorse, big enough for my whole family plus a dog. Great help in winter months.
Decent car but a bit underachieving on the interior and prefer the Auto version. Good price fir the year and model
Punches well above its weight, solid quality abound. Responsive steering and a pleasure to drive- far exceeded expectations and turns heads like no other small suv.
Too many features and a handbook that is difficult to understand. On the plus side it drives nicely and is a bit different
