Kia Carens (2013-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Practical seven-seat interior | Dull to drive compared with a Ford Grand C-Max |
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as well finished as a Volkswagen Touran |
| Improved infotainment after 2016 facelift | Lacklustre petrol engine |
Quick Summary
The third-generation Kia Carens, sold in the UK from 2013 to 2019, is a seven-seat people carrier. It stood out with Kia's market-leading seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty, offering appealing stress-free ownership and good reliability. Its immensely versatile interior is a key feature, with three individual middle-row seats and two individually folding third-row seats, though the rearmost are for occasional use. With the two rearmost seats folded, it provides a hefty 492-litre boot. The durable and practical cabin also earned a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash rating.
While comfortable and easy to drive with light and precise controls, the Carens isn't as dynamically engaging or polished as rivals like the Volkswagen Touran or Ford Grand C-Max. Engine options include a 133bhp 1.6-litre petrol and 114bhp or 134bhp 1.7-litre CRDi diesels. Three main trim levels (1, 2, 3) offered generous standard equipment, including LED daytime running lights, air-conditioning, and Bluetooth, with higher trims adding features like a reversing camera. Running costs are low, with respectable fuel economy and timing chains on all engines reducing long-term maintenance.
Best for: Drivers prioritising safety, flexibility, equipment, and reliability; families needing a versatile seven-seater with a long warranty and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, premium interior finishes, or strong petrol engine performance.

The Verdict
You should buy the Carens if: You're a driver prioritising safety, flexibility, equipment, and reliability, or a family needing a versatile seven-seater with a long warranty and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, premium interior finishes, or strong petrol engine performance.
Competitive Position: The Kia Carens (2013-2019) is a strong contender in the used MPV market, standing out with its market-leading seven-year warranty, excellent reliability, and highly versatile seven-seat interior. While it may not offer the most engaging driving dynamics or the most premium interior finishes compared to rivals like the Ford Grand C-Max or Volkswagen Touran, its generous equipment levels, five-star Euro NCAP rating, and low running costs make it an incredibly sensible and practical choice for families seeking stress-free ownership.

4.2 Overall rating
(5 reviews)The car is great value for money. It is spacious. I bought an automatic due to the ease of driving it. Sat Nav is a great feature.
it ticks all nthe boxes for me - except some times I find a higher insurence or btax rating than I can bear.
I looked at the carens as well as grand cmax .The carens has 3 full seats in 2nd row and 3rd row seats are larger and much more practical .
It was a model 2, drive very smooth. I am looking for medel 4 which has full spec.
Its an affordable family car. Porch, roomy. Good music system
