Kia Carens (2013-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Practical seven-seat interior	Dull to drive compared with a Ford Grand C-Max
Lots of standard equipment	Not as well finished as a Volkswagen Touran
Improved infotainment after 2016 facelift	Lacklustre petrol engine

Quick Summary

The Kia Carens (2013-2019) is a practical seven-seat people carrier that competes with the Ford Grand C-Max, Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, and Volkswagen Touran. Sold in the UK between 2013 and 2019, it came with Kia's market-leading seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty, far exceeding the industry-standard three-year, 60,000-mile warranty. The third-generation Carens is significantly better looking than its predecessor, with a sleeker exterior and versatile interior featuring three individual middle-row seats and two individually folding third-row seats. With a 492-litre boot when the rear seats are folded, it offers excellent flexibility for families.

The Carens remains popular thanks to its strong reliability reputation, comfortable interior, and lower cost compared to equivalent Volkswagen Tourans or Toyota Versos. The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 133bhp, whilst the 1.7-litre CRDi diesel offers 114bhp or 134bhp outputs, with the latter providing better motorway performance. A 2016 facelift introduced a snappier seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and improved infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All engines feature a steel timing chain designed to last the car's life, reducing maintenance costs. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel models achieving 45-50mpg and petrol around 35mpg.

Best for: Families prioritising practicality, flexibility, and reliability over driving dynamics; buyers seeking affordable seven-seat motoring with generous equipment levels; those wanting stress-free ownership.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling or premium interior finishes; those preferring a more powerful petrol engine; buyers wanting the smoothest diesel performance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Carens if: You prioritise practicality and flexibility over driving dynamics, seek affordable seven-seat motoring with generous equipment, or want stress-free ownership with proven reliability.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, premium interior finishes, or the smoothest diesel performance available in the MPV segment.

Competitive Position: The Kia Carens (2013-2019) is an excellent value proposition in the seven-seat MPV market. Whilst rivals like the Volkswagen Touran and Vauxhall Zafira Tourer score marginally higher with users and offer better driving dynamics and interior quality, the Carens undercuts them significantly on price. For families prioritising practicality, reliability, and affordability over premium feel and handling, the Carens represents outstanding value. Its generous equipment levels, spacious interior, and strong warranty history make it a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking dependable family transport.
