Kia Carens (2013-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Practical seven-seat interior | Dull to drive compared with a Ford Grand C-Max |
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as well finished as a Volkswagen Touran |
| Improved infotainment after 2016 facelift | Lacklustre petrol engine |
Quick Summary
The Kia Carens (2013-2019) is a seven-seat people carrier that delivers excellent practicality and versatility for family motoring. Its immensely flexible interior features three individual middle-row seats with built-in belts, outer seats that tilt and slide to improve access, and two individually folding third-row seats. With a 492-litre boot when the rearmost seats are folded, generous storage points throughout the cabin, and a durable interior, the Carens prioritises functionality over premium finishes. The original seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty was industry-leading, and the car's strong reputation for reliability makes it an appealing choice for stress-free ownership.
Driving dynamics are competent but unremarkable, with light and precise controls offering comfort and ease rather than engagement. The entry-level 1.6-litre petrol produces 133bhp but can feel underpowered when fully loaded. The 1.7-litre CRDi diesel, particularly in 134bhp form, is the better choice, offering useful mid-range torque and 45-50mpg, though it can sound coarse when worked hard. A 2016 facelift brought updated infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a snappier seven-speed dual-clutch automatic option. All engines feature timing chains rather than belts, reducing long-term maintenance costs. As a used buy, the Carens offers excellent value, practicality, and reliability at a lower cost than rivals like the Volkswagen Touran or Ford Grand C-Max.
Best for: Families prioritising space, flexibility, and equipment over driving dynamics; buyers seeking reliable, stress-free seven-seat motoring on a budget; those wanting generous standard features and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling or premium interior finishes; those seeking the smoothest diesel engine or most polished driving experience; buyers wanting the finest build quality.

The Verdict
You should buy the Carens if: You're a family prioritising space, flexibility, and equipment over driving dynamics, or seeking reliable, stress-free seven-seat motoring on a budget.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, premium interior finishes, or the smoothest diesel engine and most polished driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Kia Carens (2013-2019) is a strong contender in the seven-seat MPV market, offering excellent practicality, generous standard equipment, and outstanding value compared with rivals. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Touran for premium build quality or the Ford Grand C-Max for driving dynamics, its lower purchase price, strong reliability record, flexible interior, and low running costs make it a highly sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The 2016 facelift brought welcome infotainment improvements, further enhancing its appeal as a practical, dependable family hauler.

4.2 Overall rating
(5 reviews)The car is great value for money. It is spacious. I bought an automatic due to the ease of driving it. Sat Nav is a great feature.
it ticks all nthe boxes for me - except some times I find a higher insurence or btax rating than I can bear.
I looked at the carens as well as grand cmax .The carens has 3 full seats in 2nd row and 3rd row seats are larger and much more practical .
It was a model 2, drive very smooth. I am looking for medel 4 which has full spec.
Its an affordable family car. Porch, roomy. Good music system
