Kia Carens (2013-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Practical seven-seat interior | Dull to drive compared with a Ford Grand C-Max |
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as well finished as a Volkswagen Touran |
| Improved infotainment after 2016 facelift | Lacklustre petrol engine |
Quick Summary
The third-generation Kia Carens (2013-2019) is a versatile and family-friendly seven-seat MPV, known for its stress-free ownership thanks to Kia’s market-leading seven-year warranty and strong reliability record. It offers an immensely practical interior with three individual middle-row seats, Isofix fixings, and two occasional-use third-row seats. The 492-litre boot with the rear seats folded is a highlight, as is the clever storage for the luggage cover. While the cabin is durable and intuitive, it may lack the premium finish of some German rivals.
Driving dynamics are comfortable and easy, though it trails rivals like the Ford Grand C-Max for engagement. Engine options include a 1.6-litre petrol and a more recommendable 1.7-litre CRDi diesel (especially the 134bhp version for its torque). Running costs are reasonable, with diesel models offering good MPG, and all engines featuring a long-lasting timing chain. Equipment levels were generous and improved with the 2016 facelift, offering features like touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher trims.
Best for: Families needing a practical, reliable, and affordable seven-seater; buyers prioritising comfort, versatility, and low running costs; those seeking good reliability.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging dynamics or powerful performance; buyers who prioritise a premium interior finish over practicality; those who need spacious third-row seating for adults on long journeys.

The Verdict
You should buy the Carens if: You need a practical, reliable, and affordable seven-seater for families, prioritising comfort, versatility, and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging driving dynamics, powerful performance, a premium interior finish, or require truly spacious third-row seating for adults.
Competitive Position: The Kia Carens (2013-2019) stands out as a highly practical and reliable seven-seat MPV offering excellent value for money. While it may not offer the most engaging driving experience or the most luxurious interior compared to some rivals, its generous equipment levels, comfortable ride, and strong reputation for dependability make it a sensible and appealing choice for families on a budget. Its long original warranty and timing chain engines also contribute to lower long-term maintenance concerns.

4.2 Overall rating
(5 reviews)The car is great value for money. It is spacious. I bought an automatic due to the ease of driving it. Sat Nav is a great feature.
it ticks all nthe boxes for me - except some times I find a higher insurence or btax rating than I can bear.
I looked at the carens as well as grand cmax .The carens has 3 full seats in 2nd row and 3rd row seats are larger and much more practical .
It was a model 2, drive very smooth. I am looking for medel 4 which has full spec.
Its an affordable family car. Porch, roomy. Good music system
