Kia EV9 (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Imposing looks	Some slightly disappointing cabin materials
Hugely practical seven-seat cabin	Dynamically very average
Even entry-level car is stuffed with tech	Rear visibility isn't great

Quick Summary

The Kia EV9 is a hugely impressive all-electric luxury SUV that combines striking design with exceptional practicality. This seven-seat behemoth offers an enormous cabin with flexible seating arrangements, a cavernous boot, and an impressive 333 litres of space even with all seats in place. The entry-level Air model delivers 197bhp and a 349-mile range, whilst higher-spec versions feature dual motors producing 378bhp with a 313-mile range. All models are equipped with an enormous 99.8kWh battery and ultra-fast 800-volt charging capability, enabling a 10-80% charge in just 24 minutes at public rapid chargers.

The EV9 excels in technology and equipment, with an intuitive dual-screen infotainment system, comprehensive safety features, and a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Even the base Air model comes laden with luxury kit including heated and ventilated seats, 360-degree cameras, and a powered tailgate. Whilst the interior materials don't quite match premium German rivals, the overall package represents excellent value for a capable family SUV. Running costs are reasonable, with home charging costing around £23 for an 80% charge at national average electricity rates. However, the ride can feel slightly unsettled at lower speeds, and the driving dynamics are unremarkable for a car of this size.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, tech-rich electric SUV with impressive range and charging speed, and those wanting premium features at a more accessible price point than German competitors.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising dynamic handling, those concerned about cabin material quality, or buyers with limited rear visibility requirements.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the EV9 if: You're seeking a spacious, tech-rich electric SUV with impressive range and ultra-fast charging, or want premium features at a more accessible price than German competitors.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic handling, premium cabin materials, or require excellent rear visibility as standard.

Competitive Position: The Kia EV9 is a compelling proposition in the premium electric SUV segment, offering exceptional practicality, comprehensive technology, and strong value compared to rivals like the Audi Q7 and BMW iX. Whilst it doesn't match the Volvo XC90's overall rating or the dynamic excellence of the BMW iX, the EV9's combination of seven-seat versatility, rapid charging capability, and generous standard equipment makes it a highly sensible choice for families prioritising space and technology over driving dynamics. It represents a genuine alternative to established premium brands at a more accessible price point.
