This car is a very comfortable ride, very little noise whether its in ev or hev. Spec is very good on this model and is quite economical to run. My insurance did go up quite a lot though from having a Nissan Qashqai before.

Excellent motor to drive, especially when in sport mode. Unfortunately it was missing floor mats and the satnav sd card , but it has android auto. Its very comfortable. I cant compare it to any other hybrid because its the first hybrid Ive ever driven, but I would highly recommend this model.

Kia Niro (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy for passengers | Small boot on PHEV |
| Low running costs | Dull to drive |
| PHEV or standard hybrid options | Lacks polish of e-Niro |
Quick Summary
The Kia Niro (2016-2022) is a pioneering small SUV that broke new ground by offering no conventional petrol or diesel options. All versions are electrified, with a self-charging hybrid as the base model, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) introduced in 2017 offering up to 30 miles of electric range, and a full-electric e-Niro arriving in 2018. The interior styling is conservative with good build quality, though materials lack the premium feel of rivals like the Peugeot 3008. Space inside is reasonable for four adults, though the middle rear seat is tight, and boot space is acceptable at 373 litres for the hybrid and 324 litres for the PHEV.
The self-charging hybrid delivers genuine fuel economy of around 45mpg on motorways and better in town, whilst the PHEV requires regular charging to justify its official figures. Both models are comfortable but heavy, with light steering that lacks feedback and handling that encourages conservative driving. A 2019 facelift brought a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen on higher trims, which is responsive and intuitive. Insurance groups range from 11 to 15, and servicing is required annually or every 10,000 miles at reasonable Kia prices. The manufacturer's seven-year warranty and excellent reliability reputation are significant advantages.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking low running costs, those with access to charging facilities (PHEV), and drivers prioritising passenger space and reliability over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts wanting engaging handling, buyers needing maximum boot space, or those seeking premium interior materials and styling comparable to the e-Niro or Peugeot 3008.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Niro | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.9% | 4.6/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot 3008 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 37.3% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Niro if: You're seeking low running costs, have access to charging facilities (PHEV), or prioritise passenger space and reliability over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling, maximum boot space, or premium interior materials and styling comparable to rivals like the Peugeot 3008.
Competitive Position: The Kia Niro (2016-2022) is a capable small SUV that pioneered the all-electrified approach, offering genuine flexibility with hybrid and PHEV options. However, it sits in the middle of the pack compared to rivals. The Skoda Karoq outperforms it with superior expert ratings and better value deals, whilst the Peugeot 3008 offers more stylish design and premium materials. The Toyota C-HR matches the Niro's overall rating but provides a more engaging driving experience. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising low running costs and reliability, the Niro remains a sensible choice, but those seeking driving enjoyment or premium feel should explore alternatives.
