Kia Optima (2016-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good value as a used buy	Dull to drive
Roomy interior	PHEV loses some boot space
Good EV range in plug-in hybrid	Earlier diesels could be more refined

Quick Summary

The Kia Optima (2016-2020) is a practical and well-equipped saloon that offers exceptional value as a used purchase. Available as both a four-door saloon and five-door Sportswagon estate, it provides spacious interiors with 505 litres of boot space in the saloon and 552 litres in the estate. The car is comfortable and well-made, with generous standard equipment across all trim levels, including touchscreen infotainment systems and comprehensive safety features on higher specifications. Whilst it lacks the driving dynamics of some rivals, it excels in comfort and practicality.

The Optima is powered by a range of engines including a 1.7-litre diesel (later replaced by a more refined 1.6-litre), a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol in the GT model, and a plug-in hybrid option. The diesel variants deliver impressive fuel economy, with real-world figures in the low 50s mpg achievable. Kia's excellent reliability reputation and the availability of factory warranty coverage on many used examples make this an attractive proposition. With SUVs commanding premium prices, the Optima represents outstanding value for those seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped saloon or estate.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and practical saloon or estate, those prioritising comfort and equipment over driving dynamics, and drivers interested in plug-in hybrid technology for town driving.

Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking sharp handling and engaging driving characteristics, or buyers prioritising premium brand appeal.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Optima if: You're seeking a spacious and practical saloon or estate, prioritising comfort and equipment over driving dynamics, or interested in plug-in hybrid technology for economical town driving.

Consider alternatives if: You value sharp handling and engaging driving characteristics, or require premium brand appeal.

Competitive Position: The Kia Optima (2016-2020) is an excellent value proposition in the used saloon market, offering outstanding practicality, comfort, and equipment at competitive prices. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Passat or Ford Mondeo for driving engagement, its superior user ratings, exceptional value score, and spacious interior make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers. The availability of plug-in hybrid technology and Kia's excellent reliability reputation further strengthen its position as a sensible, well-rounded family saloon or estate.
