Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good to drive | Boot is on the small side |
| Lots of standard equipment | Being EV-only means it's expensive to buy |
| Roomy for passengers | High insurance group |
Quick Summary
The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is the third generation of the Soul and the first to be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain. Aimed at young buyers seeking fashionable styling and electric power, it offers impressive range and equipment levels at competitive prices on the used market. Available with two battery options – a 39.2kWh Urban model with 171 miles of range and a 64kWh Explore model with up to 250 miles – the Soul EV delivers smooth, progressive steering and a neutral chassis that inspires confidence in town and on country roads. The adjustable regenerative braking system and four driving modes allow drivers to tailor performance and efficiency to their needs.
The Soul EV is very efficient, achieving around 4.0 miles per kWh in real-world driving, with rapid charging capability delivering 80% charge in approximately 45 minutes. Its interior is logically laid out with an excellent 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring sharp graphics and intuitive controls. Higher trim levels include heated leather seats, head-up display, semi-autonomous drive mode, and LED headlights. Running costs are minimal, though servicing is required every 10,000 miles or 12 months. The main drawback is the relatively small 315-litre boot, which may disappoint those seeking proper family practicality. As a used buy, the Soul EV represents excellent value, offering impressive range and equipment levels for the money.
Best for: Environmentally conscious buyers seeking a practical electric car with excellent range, those prioritising comfort and equipment over boot space, and drivers wanting an affordable used EV with impressive real-world performance.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a large boot for family holidays or those seeking the lowest-cost electric vehicle option, as the Soul EV's premium positioning makes it pricier than some rivals when new.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Soul EV | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot e-2008 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 42.6% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen ID.3 | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 38.4% | 4.3/5 |
| MG ZS EV | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Soul EV if: You seek a practical electric car with excellent range and equipment, prioritise comfort and passenger space, or want an affordable used EV with impressive real-world performance and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You require a large boot for family holidays, need the absolute lowest-cost electric vehicle, or prefer a more conventional hatchback design.
Competitive Position: The Kia Soul EV is a fantastic all-round electric car that represents excellent value on the used market. Whilst the Peugeot e-2008 offers slightly better value deals and the MG ZS EV provides a more affordable entry point, the Soul EV excels with its impressive range, smooth driving dynamics, and generous equipment levels. Its roomy interior and efficient powertrain make it highly competitive, though the smaller-than-average boot may disappoint those seeking maximum practicality. For buyers wanting a well-equipped, long-range used EV at a sensible price, the Soul EV is a compelling choice.
