Kia Venga (2009-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Versatile family-friendly cabin | Dull to drive |
| Some of the original seven-year warranty should still cover recent examples | Disappointing fuel economy |
| Generous kit on all models bar the entry-level '1' | More reliability issues than you'd expect of a Kia |
Quick Summary
The Kia Venga (2009-2019) occupies a middle ground between a hatchback and a people carrier, designed to offer greater practicality than a typical supermini. It delivers exceptional interior space with a versatile cabin that easily accommodates four adults with generous headroom and legroom. The rear bench features a 60:40 split-fold arrangement with reclining backrests and fore-and-aft sliding capability, opening up to a cavernous 1,253 litres when fully folded. Even at its smallest configuration, the boot offers 440 litres of space with a low loading lip and flat sides. Standard equipment levels are generous across most trim levels, with the 2015 facelift introducing a top-end 4 trim featuring keyless start and a panoramic sunroof.
However, the Venga's driving experience is disappointing. Available with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, none deliver spirited performance, with the 1.4-litre petrol particularly underpowered. Real-world fuel consumption significantly exceeds official figures, with owners reporting thirsty consumption across all variants. The ride is bumpy at low speeds, steering lacks feel, and excessive body roll occurs even at modest cornering speeds. Service intervals are reasonable, with diesel engines serviced every 20,000 miles and petrols every 10,000 miles, though annual servicing is required. The transferrable seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty offers potential savings on major repairs.
Best for: Families prioritising interior space and practicality, those seeking generous standard equipment, and buyers wanting a spacious cabin with clever seating arrangements.
Not ideal for: Drivers valuing engaging handling, those concerned about fuel economy, or buyers expecting Kia reliability standards, as the Venga experiences more issues than typical for the brand.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Venga | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.4% | 4.0/5 |
| Honda Jazz | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford B-Max | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 28.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroën C3 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 48.5% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Venga if: You prioritise interior space and practicality, seek generous standard equipment, or want a spacious cabin with clever seating arrangements for family use.
Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling, are concerned about fuel economy, or expect Kia's typical reliability standards, as the Venga experiences more issues than usual for the brand.
Competitive Position: The Kia Venga (2009-2019) is a capable family hauler that excels in practicality and interior versatility, but falls short dynamically compared to rivals. The Ford B-Max and Honda Jazz both score higher on expert ratings and overall CarGurus ratings, offering better driving experiences. The Citroën C3 Picasso provides significantly better value, with 48.5% good or great deals available. Whilst the Venga delivers room and clever seating, its dull driving dynamics, disappointing fuel economy, and reliability concerns make it a less compelling choice than its competitors, particularly the more engaging Ford B-Max or the better-value Citroën C3 Picasso.

(18 reviews)Excellent car with perfect drive ability really smooth automatic
After 50yrs of driving several cars I found the Kia Venga is the best I've had. It's fabulous in every respect that much so I've just bought another Kia venga 4 isg.
It is a good small mpv. I have diesel which is very economical. I think it is quite different to the competitors and I think Kia made a real error to withdraw it from their range. I will struggle to find a replacement.
I am pleased so far with the recently purchased vehicle. It has a raft of equipment that is good to have (eg heated seats, cruise control, automatic climate control) and good safety credentials. The only issue is the keyless entry system that takes getting used to, especially as the boot unlocks itself when you are in the proximity of the vehicle with the key. I had to go online and access a forum to ensure that this was normal and not a fault with the mechanism! It compares well with the Hyundai ix20 although it has a better suspension setup offset by less extras. The vehicle is spacious, reasonably fuel-efficient, It is quiet, comfortable, and very easy to drive.
Good value all round. Lots of features. Easy to drive.
