Kia Ceed (2012-2018) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good value | Boring to drive |
| Decent standard equipment | Interior design trails best in class |
| Long warranty from new | Ceed GT lacks thrills of a proper hot hatch |
Quick Summary
The Kia Ceed (2012-2018), the second-generation mid-sized family hatchback, marked a significant improvement over its predecessor. Much better looking inside and out, well equipped, and decent to drive, it could withstand direct comparison with established rivals such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. The Ceed was now a properly desirable car, not just a sensible, budget-conscious choice. Three-door versions were badged Pro_Ceed, whilst the estate was known as the Ceed Sportswagon or SW. The car is spacious enough for five adults, with a 380-litre boot expandable to 1,318 litres with the rear seats folded, or 528 litres in the estate version expanding to 1,660 litres.
Except for the GT model, the Ceed isn't the most enthralling to drive; steering is over-assisted and engines lack verve. However, it cruises quietly with a comfortable ride, making it unfussy daily transport. Engine options include 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units, a turbocharged 1.6 for the GT model producing 198bhp, and diesel engines with 89bhp to 134bhp. The most fuel-efficient version is the 1.6 CRDi diesel, achieving around 55mpg, whilst the 1.0-litre turbo petrol manages approximately 40mpg. Standard equipment is generous, with even entry-level models featuring air-conditioning, six airbags, and Bluetooth connectivity. Servicing and repair costs are very reasonable, with Kia offering service plans to help guard against price inflation.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking dependability, reasonable driving experience, style, space for the family, and high standard equipment levels.
Not ideal for: Keen drivers wanting an engaging, thrilling drive or those prioritising premium interior design comparable to the Volkswagen Golf.

The Verdict
You should buy the Ceed if: You're seeking dependability, reasonable driving experience, style, space for the family, and high standard equipment levels on a budget.
Consider alternatives if: You are a keen driver wanting an engaging, thrilling drive or prioritise premium interior design comparable to the Volkswagen Golf.
Competitive Position: The Kia Ceed (2012-2018) is a credible alternative to mainstream rivals in the family hatchback segment. Whilst it isn't as engaging to drive as the Ford Focus or as premium as the Volkswagen Golf, it's close enough to feel proud to have on your driveway. It offers dependability, a reasonable driving experience, modicum of style, plenty of space, and high standard equipment levels. The Hyundai i30 offers slightly higher user ratings, whilst the Ford Focus Mk3 provides superior driving dynamics. However, the Ceed's excellent value, generous standard equipment, and long warranty from new make it an excellent ownership prospect for those prioritising practicality and affordability.
