Heading off-road? The Defender has always been the car built for just that. The original, simply known as the Land Rover, launched in 1948 as a tough and utilitarian off-roader; the name Defender was adopted in 1990 to distinguish it from the then-new Discovery, until it finally ceased production in 2016. The Defender was revived in 2020 as a larger and more luxurious model, though nonetheless a highly capable 4x4. The numbers 90 and 110 used to refer to the wheelbase lengths on the old model; that’s not the case with the current car, but Land Rover kept the numbers to distinguish five- and seven-seat versions, while a larger 130 joined the range in 2022, with seating for up to eight.
