Land Rover Defender (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Combines utility and luxury | The three-door 90 has a tiny boot |
| Superb to drive if you leave Tarmac behind | Expensive to buy and run |
| Sophisticated and comfortable on the road | Land Rover's poor reputation for reliability might make you think twice |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Defender (2020-present) is a sophisticated reimagining of an icon, evolving from a purely utilitarian vehicle into a luxurious family car with peerless off-roading capability and modern comforts. While prices start above £50,000, it offers a blend of ruggedness and refinement. Available in 90 (short-wheelbase, 5/6 seats), 110 (long-wheelbase, 7 seats), and the massive 130 (8 seats, up to 2,516 litres luggage) variants, there's a Defender for various needs.
On the road, it's comfortable, quiet, and surprisingly agile thanks to light steering and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Off-road, it remains a formidable 4x4 with features like air suspension, locking differentials, and Terrain Response. Engine options include petrol, diesel, and a plug-in hybrid (P400e). Running costs are on the higher side, with diesels achieving around 30mpg, petrols in the low-20s, and expensive servicing, though service plans are available. Despite potential reliability concerns, its desirability and versatility make it a compelling choice.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, families needing space and capability, buyers seeking a blend of utilitarian robustness with modern luxury and comfort.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those sensitive to high running costs or reliability concerns, or those needing a large boot in the three-door 90 model.

I think this car has a tough appearance, large enough space, and strong off-road performance, which is suitable for my Dai family to travel. I like it very much.
This is a very nice car. It is a slightly more basic model than some but it does what I need without the bells and whistles. As I’ve only just bought it it’s too early to give a full review but I like it and recommend it if you can afford one.
