Land Rover Defender Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Combines utility and luxury | The three-door 90 has a tiny boot |
| Sophisticated and comfortable on the road | Expensive to buy and run |
| Superb to drive if you venture off-road | Land Rover's poor reputation for reliability might make you think twice |
Quick Summary
The modern Land Rover Defender is a distinctive and desirable vehicle that combines unmistakable character with exceptional breadth of ability. Available in multiple configurations—the short-wheelbase 90, long-wheelbase 110, and spacious 130—it caters to various needs, from five-seat compact models to eight-seat family haulers. The Defender 130 offers an impressive 2,516 litres of luggage space with seats folded, whilst the 90 provides a more nimble option. Engine choices range from efficient six-cylinder diesels delivering strong torque and full towing capacity, to petrol options including a plug-in hybrid and a formidable 5.0-litre supercharged V8, plus the flagship Octa with its 626bhp 4.4-litre V8.
On the road, the Defender is comfortable, quiet, and refined, with light steering and an eight-speed automatic making it undemanding for daily use. Off-road, it's genuinely capable, with air suspension, locking differentials, and Terrain Response modes handling wading, rocky terrain, mud, and sand with ease. Diesel models achieve around 30mpg, whilst petrol variants manage low-20s figures. Running costs are substantial due to upmarket servicing and insurance, particularly for V8 variants. Despite Land Rover's broader reliability concerns, the Defender has performed well in its class, blending genuine usability with modern comfort and technology that earlier generations could never have offered.
Best for: Buyers seeking a capable luxury off-roader with road comfort, those needing versatile seating and luggage configurations, and enthusiasts wanting genuine off-road prowess with premium refinement.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising boot space in the 90, or those concerned about running costs and potential reliability issues.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Defender | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz G-Class | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.8% | 4.0/5 |

| Jeep Wrangler | 2/5 | 5.0/5 | 26.4% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Defender if: You seek a capable luxury off-roader with excellent road comfort, need versatile seating and luggage configurations, or want genuine off-road prowess with premium refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise boot space in the 90, or have concerns about running costs and potential reliability issues.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Defender stands out in the luxury off-road segment, offering superior user ratings (5.0/5) compared to rivals and a strong expert rating (4/5). Whilst the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Toyota Land Cruiser match it on user satisfaction, the Defender excels in expert assessment and overall CarGurus rating (4.3/5). The Jeep Wrangler, though equally loved by users, scores lower on expert evaluation. The Defender's combination of versatility, multiple body styles, and genuine capability makes it the most well-rounded choice for those wanting luxury, practicality, and off-road competence, though at a premium price point.

I think this car has a tough appearance, large enough space, and strong off-road performance, which is suitable for my Dai family to travel. I like it very much.
This is a very nice car. It is a slightly more basic model than some but it does what I need without the bells and whistles. As I’ve only just bought it it’s too early to give a full review but I like it and recommend it if you can afford one.
