The numbers associated with the Land Rover Discovery are a little bit misleading. The original Discovery was first released in 1989 as a more affordable alternative to the Range Rover, and although the Series II came along in 1998, it was actually just a heavily revised version of the first Discovery. The real change didn’t happen until 2004 when the Discovery 3 came along, which used all-new (and very unconventional) underpinnings. It was a seven-seat luxury 4x4 alternative to cars like the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90, and it was better off-road than any of them, and pretty good on it, too.
