Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Immensely capable off road | Lots of reliability worries |
| Superbly comfortable on tarmac | High running costs demand deep pockets |
| Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin | Not as sharp to drive as the equivalent Audi or BMW |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016), affectionately known as the Disco 4, is a versatile seven-seat SUV equally at home at a top-end restaurant or loaded with family and dogs on the motorway. It combines practicality, comfort, and off-road capability with understated affluence. The spacious cabin features individual rear seats that fold independently, configuring the boot to suit your needs. A split tailgate adds further versatility. On the road, the Discovery 4 delivers a smooth, comfortable ride with controlled handling and excellent grip, though it prioritises comfort over sportiness compared to rivals like the BMW X5 or Audi Q7.
The interior features a handsome, well-designed dashboard with chunky plastics, expensive leather, and quality switchgear. However, running costs are substantial—fuel consumption rarely exceeds 25-30 mpg in everyday use, and most models sit in the second-highest tax band. The 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines require timing belt changes every 105,000-112,000 miles, a costly four-figure job. Reliability is a concern, with genuine examples becoming scarcer. Independent Land Rover specialists offer cheaper servicing than franchised dealers. Despite these drawbacks, a well-maintained Discovery 4 offers unmatched practicality and capability for those prepared to invest in proper maintenance.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those seeking a capable off-road vehicle with on-road comfort, and buyers wanting a prestigious SUV with genuine versatility.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about high fuel and tax costs, those prioritising reliability, or drivers wanting sharp handling comparable to premium German rivals.

| Land Rover Discovery 4 | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 30.2% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery 4 if: You need to carry seven passengers, want a capable off-road vehicle with genuine on-road comfort, or seek a prestigious SUV with unmatched versatility and practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about high fuel and tax costs, prioritise reliability above all else, or want sharper handling comparable to premium German rivals.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery 4 stands out in the large SUV market for its seven-seat practicality and off-road capability. Whilst the BMW X5 E70 offers sharper driving dynamics and the Volvo XC90 provides Scandinavian refinement, the Discovery 4 delivers superior versatility and genuine adventure credentials. The Toyota Land Cruiser matches its off-road prowess but lacks the same on-road comfort. However, reliability concerns and high running costs mean the Discovery 4 demands careful selection and substantial ongoing investment. For buyers prepared to commit to proper maintenance, it remains an unbeatable choice for families seeking a capable, comfortable, and characterful seven-seat SUV.

What people say
This Car offers all the requirements for my family. Plenty of space for the growing children, plenty of space for all our ‘stuff’. Very safe and able to tow.
I would suggest you have to have some sort of need for a Discovery, I shoot. I understand that should you wish to make your whole life less meaningful and buy a caravan, they make excellent towing vehicles. They are an excellent mix of ruggedness and style, luxury and practicality, whilst being more ageless than more popular cars. Don’t buy one thinking you can run it for nothing, this is my second Discovery, they do absorb a fair bit of budget, only you can decide if the price is worth it.
Most important car has a full service history, this model is not fully loaded but from my experience with discovery’s more kit fitted, more to go wrong.hoping I’ve found a good one. This will be my 5th discovery over a 25 year period. Car looks very good.
Wonderful car let down by fragile build and huge costs to therefore maintain.
Having a discovery 4 is comfort and reliable 4x4 vehicle this a vehicle that has most comfort and excellent fuel mileage for a top 4x4 vehicle I just recommend you should drive one for yourself and see just how good these vehicles are and road handling to
