This Car offers all the requirements for my family. Plenty of space for the growing children, plenty of space for all our ‘stuff’. Very safe and able to tow.

I would suggest you have to have some sort of need for a Discovery, I shoot. I understand that should you wish to make your whole life less meaningful and buy a caravan, they make excellent towing vehicles. They are an excellent mix of ruggedness and style, luxury and practicality, whilst being more ageless than more popular cars. Don’t buy one thinking you can run it for nothing, this is my second Discovery, they do absorb a fair bit of budget, only you can decide if the price is worth it.

Wonderful car let down by fragile build and huge costs to therefore maintain.

Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Immensely capable off road | Lots of reliability worries |
| Superbly comfortable on tarmac | High running costs demand deep pockets |
| Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin | Not as sharp to drive as equivalent Audi or BMW |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016), affectionately known as the Disco 4, is a versatile seven-seat SUV equally at home at a fine restaurant or loaded with family, dogs, and luggage on the motorway. It combines understated affluence with genuine off-road capability, offering a spacious interior with flexible seating configurations and a split tailgate for easy loading. The handsome dashboard features quality materials and solid engineering, whilst the suspension is tuned for comfort rather than sportiness, delivering a smooth, controlled ride that prioritises safety and security over dynamic handling.
However, the Discovery 4 comes with significant caveats. It has a reputation for patchy reliability, and running costs are substantial—expect fuel consumption of 25-30mpg, high tax bills, and expensive servicing. The 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre engines require timing belt changes every seven years or 105,000-112,000 miles, a costly job that can run into four figures. Despite these drawbacks, a well-maintained example offers exceptional practicality, comfort, and off-road ability. Independent specialists offer cheaper servicing than franchised dealers, and pre-paid servicing plans can help manage costs.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those seeking a capable off-roader with on-road comfort, and buyers prepared to invest in maintenance and running costs for a versatile vehicle.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising reliability, drivers seeking sporty handling comparable to BMW X5 or Audi Q7, or those unwilling to commit to high fuel and tax expenses.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery 4 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 43.8% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 E70 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 40.3% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery 4 if: You need seven seats, seek a capable off-roader with genuine on-road comfort, and are prepared to invest in maintenance and running costs for a versatile, practical vehicle.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise reliability, seek sporty handling comparable to premium rivals, require budget-friendly running costs, or are unwilling to commit to high fuel and tax expenses.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery 4 stands out in the premium seven-seat SUV market for its exceptional practicality, off-road capability, and on-road comfort. Whilst it lacks the sharp handling of the BMW X5 and carries reliability concerns, it offers superior space and versatility. The Volvo XC90 matches its user ratings but commands higher prices, whilst the Toyota Land Cruiser provides better reliability at the cost of less refinement. For buyers willing to manage its quirks, the Discovery 4 remains an unmatched all-rounder that does almost everything well.
