Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Drives well on the road and off it | Reliability is not a strong point |
| Reasonably practical cabin | Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks the off-road ability of a proper Land Rover |
| The Freelander 2 is a very stable tow car | The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) offers remarkable off-road capability, appealing to those who desire a go-anywhere adventure, even if rarely utilised. While some rivals might be quieter or handle better on tarmac, the Freelander 2 excels when the road ends. Its cabin is smart and upmarket, comfortably accommodating four adults, though rear space and boot width can be tight compared to some competitors. With a 755-litre boot (1,670 litres with seats down) and practical features like a waterproof boot floor cover, it’s designed for versatility. Despite its size and weight, it provides a relaxing drive with direct steering and a comfortable, relatively quiet ride, making it capable on back roads.
Initially available with a 3.2-litre petrol i6 or a 2.2-litre TD4 turbodiesel, the petrol option was later dropped. The turbodiesel engines, including the more powerful SD4, became the mainstays, with later manual versions featuring stop/start for improved efficiency. Standard equipment across trims like S, GS, and HSE is generous, including alloy wheels and climate control, with higher trims offering luxuries such as leather and panoramic sunroofs. While known for its blend of off-road prowess and on-road sophistication, potential buyers should be aware of known reliability issues, making a pre-purchase inspection advisable.
Best for: Drivers needing strong off-road capability, a stable tow car, those who appreciate a smart, upmarket cabin, or buyers looking for a refined, comfortable SUV with year-round mobility.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising ultimate on-road agility, those sensitive to potential reliability issues, or those needing a wider boot space.

The Verdict
You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You need a capable off-roader, a stable tow car, or a refined and comfortable compact SUV with an upmarket feel.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ultimate on-road handling, are concerned about potential reliability issues, or require more generous rear passenger or boot width.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a distinguished contender in the compact SUV market, primarily due to its exceptional off-road prowess and strong towing ability, setting it apart from many rivals. It offers a refined and comfortable driving experience with an upmarket cabin, embodying a 'mini Range Rover' feel. While it may not be the most agile on-road and some reliability concerns are noted, its unique blend of ruggedness, sophistication, and promise of year-round mobility makes it a compelling choice for those seeking adventure or practical versatility.

4.5 Overall rating
(27 reviews)Having had 2 HSE models from 2007 to 2017 I found them to be excellent vehicles. I had no problems with them and they covered all the bases for my travel and passenger needs.
Having owned 2 from 2007 to 2017 I enjoyed reliability, comfort, good economy for its size and the pleasure of driving it. Replaced it with a (Freelander 3 )the Discovery Sport.
Roomy, comfortable, well made and a joy to drive. Car is equipped with all the bells and whistles that I need and hopefully will last a good few years.
Excellent car in every way. The only downside is my wife wont let me drive it.
Excellent vehicle, great driving position. Full space in rear when lifting door. Max storage for large kit.
