MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that represents exceptional value in the competitive family SUV market. Starting at just £25,000, it significantly undercuts rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai whilst offering a well-rounded package with a spacious 507-litre boot, refined exterior design, and generous standard equipment. Available with either a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine or as a plug-in hybrid with an impressive 75-mile electric range, the HS caters to different priorities and budgets. The PHEV variant, starting at just over £31,000, is particularly competitive for a plug-in hybrid in this class.
Whilst the petrol engine feels underwhelming and the infotainment system prioritises touchscreen controls over physical buttons, the HS excels in practicality and comfort. The suspension absorbs bumps well, rear legroom is excellent for taller passengers, and the near-flat rear floor accommodates three adults comfortably. However, the steering lacks feedback and the overall driving experience isn't as engaging as some competitors. For budget-conscious families seeking a practical, well-equipped SUV, the MG HS delivers impressive value, though potential buyers should consider MG's reliability reputation before committing.
Best for: Budget-conscious families, those prioritising practicality and equipment over driving dynamics, and company car drivers interested in the PHEV's low CO2 emissions and Benefit-in-Kind advantages.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, those concerned about brand reliability, or buyers wanting excellent fuel economy from the petrol model.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG HS | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.2% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the HS if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise practicality and equipment over driving dynamics, or are a company car driver interested in the PHEV's low emissions and tax advantages.
Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging handling, are concerned about brand reliability, or require excellent fuel economy from a petrol model.
Competitive Position: The MG HS is a standout value proposition in the family SUV segment, undercutting rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson by thousands of pounds whilst delivering comparable practicality and equipment. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead on driving dynamics and overall refinement, and the Hyundai Tucson offers slightly better user ratings, the MG HS remains the most affordable option without significant compromise. The PHEV variant is particularly compelling for those seeking efficiency and low running costs. However, potential buyers must weigh the exceptional value against MG's reputation for reliability, making this an ideal choice for those prioritising affordability and practicality over brand prestige.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Just love this car. Especially the cabin space plenty of room and a comfortable drive.
Great value for the amount of features included such as heated leather seats and a panoramic roof. The finish on the dashboard, seats and doors is very impressive. The steering is responsive. The drivers seat is very easy to manoeuvre into the perfect position. The sport drive is extremely punchy! Very impressive in terms of style and value for money. Used to be a BMW X1 owner but no more! Delighted with the car so an MG HS convert.
No front parking sensors on petrol models. Quite spacious inside
I think its the poor mans range rover .extras a plenty .getting my new mg hs exclusive on 3rd of January
MG HS Exclusive 1.5 Manual Petrol. - Excellent value - a lot of kit for the money. Manual version should come with power tail gate to make it even better but doesn’t. Lots of other cars in this bracket Mazda CX-5; Kia Sportage; Nissan Quashqai; Ford Kuga; Peugeot 2008 etc.
