Many drivers appreciate the comfort and ample cabin space, making it a pleasant vehicle for both short and long journeys. However, some express disappointment over the absence of certain features, such as front parking sensors on petrol variants, indicating room for improvement in its overall specification.

Brilliant car it’s huge but so easy to drive. I am trying to work my way through the 322 pages of the handbook. It has all the bells and whistles I just have to learn how to use them. I’m really pleased with this car I definitely made the right choice

Great value for the amount of features included such as heated leather seats and a panoramic roof. The finish on the dashboard, seats and doors is very impressive. The steering is responsive. The drivers seat is very easy to manoeuvre into the perfect position. The sport drive is extremely punchy! Very impressive in terms of style and value for money. Used to be a BMW X1 owner but no more! Delighted with the car so an MG HS convert.

MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that represents exceptional value in the competitive family SUV market. Starting at just £25,000, it significantly undercuts rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai whilst offering a well-rounded package with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, refined exterior design, and spacious interior. The 507-litre boot provides ample luggage space, and rear seats fold in a 60/40 split for flexibility. Available with either a petrol engine or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, the HS delivers excellent value in terms of equipment and running costs, with the PHEV offering an impressive electric range of up to 75 miles.
The entry-level 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 169bhp and feels adequate around town, though it becomes noisy at higher speeds. The PHEV variant combines the same petrol engine with an electric motor and 24.7kWh battery, producing 307bhp and achieving 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds with CO2 emissions as low as 12g/km, making it attractive for company car drivers. Whilst the HS excels in practicality and value, it's not the most engaging to drive, with steering lacking feedback and ride comfort prioritised over dynamic handling. The infotainment system is functional but can be frustrating due to excessive touchscreen reliance, and active safety features are sometimes overly sensitive.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical and spacious family SUV, those interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency, and families prioritising value and equipment over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling or premium brand appeal, those concerned about MG's reliability reputation, or buyers requiring excellent fuel economy from the petrol model.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG HS | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 39.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Hyundai Tucson | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 39.2% | 4.5/5 |

| BYD Seal U | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 37.7% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HS if: You're seeking exceptional value in a practical family SUV, interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency, or prioritising spaciousness and equipment over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, premium brand reputation, or require excellent fuel economy from a petrol engine.
Competitive Position: The MG HS is a compelling choice in the family SUV segment, offering outstanding value that undercuts rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson by thousands of pounds. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead for driving dynamics and the Hyundai Tucson scores higher for user satisfaction, the MG HS delivers impressive practicality, generous equipment, and an excellent plug-in hybrid option at a significantly lower price point. For budget-conscious buyers unwilling to compromise on space and features, the HS represents a hard-to-beat proposition, though potential reliability concerns warrant consideration.
