MG3 (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Nimble handling | Stiff and uncomfortable ride |
| Affordably priced | The interior feels cheap |
| Reasonably practical | Surprisingly expensive servicing |
Quick Summary
The MG3 (2013-present) is a budget-focused supermini that aims to offer affordability in a segment dominated by rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and VW Polo. Owned by Chinese company SAIC, it has shifted from MG's classic sports car heritage to a more practical, albeit basic, hatchback. While not a hot hatch, it offers surprisingly nimble handling that hints at the brand's sporty past, making it a fun car to drive around corners despite its firm ride and dated engine.
Space inside is reasonable, but the interior quality clearly reflects its budget pricing, featuring low-rent plastics and a clunky infotainment system, even after a 2018 facelift. The 1.5-litre petrol engine feels old, noisy, and lacks efficiency compared to turbocharged rivals, delivering around 40mpg. Servicing costs are unexpectedly high, and significant depreciation means its low purchase price might not translate to long-term savings, despite using a durable timing chain.
Best for: Buyers on a very tight budget, those prioritising nimble handling over ride comfort, and individuals seeking a spacious interior for the price point, coupled with a long warranty.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium interior quality, a smooth and refined driving experience, good fuel economy, low servicing costs, or strong resale value.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG MG3 | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 24.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Suzuki Swift | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 30.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Kia Rio | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 31.9% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MG3 if: You're on a very tight budget, prioritise nimble handling over ride comfort, or need a spacious interior and long warranty for the lowest possible cash.
Consider alternatives if: You seek premium interior quality, a smooth and refined driving experience, good fuel economy, low servicing costs, or strong resale value.
Competitive Position: The MG3 stands out primarily for its low purchase price, offering a spacious cabin and surprisingly nimble handling for its segment. While it struggles against rivals like the Dacia Sandero and Suzuki Swift in terms of interior refinement, engine efficiency, and long-term running costs (due to high servicing and depreciation), its budget-friendly entry point makes it an option for those who simply need a new car for the least amount of money, accepting its compromises in quality and refinement.

4.2 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Happy for a car that is chap to insure And a pleasure to drive
Good car well screwed together. 1500cc engine runs well reasonably economic. Wish it could have had a 6speed box and perhaps a turbo .Overall a nice car and well worth considering.
The features in the car were fine but I didnt like the driving position. The car was reasonably well equipped but it was very low to the floor. The steering was a bit loose and if was to purchase a MG I think I would opt for the larger model ZS. Not for me but you may like it
Same but newer model as mine but more scratched and dented than mine so not purchased
Great car at an amazing price. drives well and is comfortable. may not be the highest quality but great value for the money.
