MINI (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lively and entertaining to drive | The Convertible has a small boot |
| The EV is ideal around town | Ungainly looks if you choose the five-door |
| John Cooper Works GP cars are very quick | More powerful models can wear out tyres quickly |
Quick Summary
The MINI (2013-present), codenamed F56, is the third generation under BMW's ownership. While it has grown in size over the years, challenging its "MINI" name, it retains its iconic cute styling and lively, go-kart-like handling. This generation introduced an all-new platform and engine range, including a less common five-door version and a Convertible, with extensive personalisation options remaining a key appeal.
The current engine line-up features turbocharged petrol units, with power ranging from 134bhp in Cooper models to 302bhp in John Cooper Works editions. An all-electric model has been available since 2019, and used examples can also be found with frugal diesel engines. Running costs vary significantly depending on the powertrain, with the Electric model being the cheapest to run, and the optional TLC servicing package offering valuable long-term savings.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise lively handling and a fun driving experience, those seeking a premium feel in a compact car, city dwellers considering an EV, or buyers who appreciate extensive personalisation options.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing generous rear passenger space in the three-door model, a large boot, or those who find the five-door's aesthetics ungainly. It's also not ideal for those on a very strict budget for running performance variants.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MINI Mini | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 38.9% | 4.2/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 43.3% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi A1 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MINI if: You prioritise lively handling, a fun driving experience, a premium feel in a compact car, or are considering an electric vehicle for city use.
Consider alternatives if: You need significant rear passenger space or a large boot, find the five-door's aesthetics unappealing, or are on a very tight budget for running high-performance models.
Competitive Position: The MINI (2013-present) stands out in the premium compact hatchback segment with its distinctive styling, engaging driving dynamics, and extensive personalisation options. While it may not offer the most practical rear space or boot capacity compared to some rivals, its high-quality interior, range of efficient engines (including an EV option), and spirited performance (especially in JCW models) make it a highly desirable choice for drivers seeking character and fun over ultimate practicality.

4.5 Overall rating
(61 reviews)This is a lovely car to drive, very firm, holds the road, very nippy! Goes really fast if you want too. It looks great too. One downside is that my model doesnt do android play or have sat nab, which I thought should be standard.
The car was lovely unfortunately the weather was awful with snow so a road test was not available. The only thing that was not to our liking was the drivers seat the leather was wrinkled. We will try to make another viewing.
The engine is responsive as is the automatic gearbox very nice to drive
Very Good value for money, came as described and seller could not be helpful enough. Looks and drives excellent certainly value for money in my book.
Ace little car. Well built. Forgot how much fun they are.
