MINI (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lively and entertaining to drive | The Convertible has a small boot |
| The EV is ideal around town | Ungainly looks if you choose the five-door |
| John Cooper Works GP cars are very quick | More powerful models can wear out tyres quickly |
Quick Summary
The third-generation MINI, codenamed F56 and launched in 2014, has grown in size but retains its iconic cute styling and lively handling. While the 3-door model's rear seats and boot remain compact, the introduction of a 5-door version significantly improves rear passenger space and offers a more practical boot, closer to that of a supermini. This makes the current MINI the most mature and accommodating version yet, balancing its heritage with modern demands for practicality.
The MINI maintains its "go-kart" agility thanks to quick steering, firm suspension, and perky engines, with a comfortable ride and low noise levels for motorway cruising. Engine options range from efficient three-cylinder petrol units to powerful John Cooper Works models, including a potent 302bhp GP version. An all-electric model offers fun city driving with a real-world range of around 100 miles, and frugal diesel options are available on the used market. Running costs vary widely by model, but the Electric is the cheapest to run, and the optional TLC servicing package offers peace of mind for up to five years.
Best for: Drivers seeking lively, engaging handling, those who appreciate high levels of personalisation, city dwellers (MINI Electric), or performance enthusiasts (JCW models).
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear passenger space or boot capacity (especially the 3-door or Convertible), those on a strict budget for running costs (JCW models), or those who dislike the 5-door's altered aesthetics.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MINI Mini | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 38.9% | 4.2/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 43.3% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi A1 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MINI if: You want an engaging and fun-to-drive hatchback with premium appeal, extensive personalisation options, and a range of powertrains including an efficient EV and high-performance JCW models.
Consider alternatives if: You frequently carry adult passengers in the rear (especially with the 3-door), need a very large boot, or are seeking the absolute lowest running costs from a high-performance model.
Competitive Position: The MINI (2013-present) stands out in the premium compact segment for its distinctive styling, "go-kart" handling, and high-quality interior. While rivals like the Fiat 500 offer similar charm and the Audi A1 provides a more subdued premium experience, the MINI's broad range of engines, including a compelling EV and thrilling JCW variants, gives it a unique edge. Its blend of character, performance, and improved practicality (especially in 5-door form) makes it a strong choice, albeit with a premium price tag that reflects its aspirational positioning.

4.5 Overall rating
(61 reviews)This is a lovely car to drive, very firm, holds the road, very nippy! Goes really fast if you want too. It looks great too. One downside is that my model doesnt do android play or have sat nab, which I thought should be standard.
The car was lovely unfortunately the weather was awful with snow so a road test was not available. The only thing that was not to our liking was the drivers seat the leather was wrinkled. We will try to make another viewing.
The engine is responsive as is the automatic gearbox very nice to drive
Very Good value for money, came as described and seller could not be helpful enough. Looks and drives excellent certainly value for money in my book.
Ace little car. Well built. Forgot how much fun they are.
