MINI (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lively and entertaining to drive | The Convertible has a small boot |
| The EV is ideal around town | Ungainly looks if you choose the five-door |
| John Cooper Works GP cars are very quick | More powerful models can wear out tyres quickly |
Quick Summary
The third-generation BMW MINI (F56), launched in 2014, has grown in size but retains its iconic cute styling, lively handling, and strong personalization options. Available as a three-door or a more practical five-door, and a Convertible, it offers a range of turbocharged petrol engines from 134bhp to 302bhp in the John Cooper Works. An all-electric model has been available since 2019, alongside frugal diesel options for the used market.
Despite its increased dimensions, the MINI maintains its "go-kart-like" agility with quick steering and firm suspension, yet offers a surprisingly comfortable ride. The interior boasts a high-quality feel with an intuitive BMW-sourced iDrive infotainment system. Running costs vary significantly by model, with the Electric being the cheapest to run and performance variants consuming more. The transferable TLC servicing package is a valuable addition for many owners.
Best for: Drivers valuing lively handling, extensive personalisation, a premium feel, or those seeking an urban EV or potent hot hatch.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear passenger space or boot capacity, or those put off by the five-door's ungainly styling.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MINI Mini | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.5% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the MINI if: You appreciate lively handling, extensive personalisation, and a premium feel in a compact car, or are seeking an urban EV or a potent hot hatch.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear passenger space or boot capacity in the three-door or Convertible models, or find the five-door's styling ungainly.
Competitive Position: The MINI (2013-present) stands out in the premium compact car segment by skillfully blending iconic design with engaging driving dynamics, a high-quality interior, and extensive customisation. While it has grown in size, it successfully retains its spirited character, offering a versatile range from an efficient Electric model to the high-performance John Cooper Works. Its premium pricing is justified by its unique appeal, making it a strong choice for those seeking personality and driving fun over sheer practicality or budget-friendliness.

4.5 Overall rating
(61 reviews)This is a lovely car to drive, very firm, holds the road, very nippy! Goes really fast if you want too. It looks great too. One downside is that my model doesnt do android play or have sat nab, which I thought should be standard.
The car was lovely unfortunately the weather was awful with snow so a road test was not available. The only thing that was not to our liking was the drivers seat the leather was wrinkled. We will try to make another viewing.
The engine is responsive as is the automatic gearbox very nice to drive
Very Good value for money, came as described and seller could not be helpful enough. Looks and drives excellent certainly value for money in my book.
Ace little car. Well built. Forgot how much fun they are.
