Maserati Levante (2017-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
A rare and exclusive alternative to more obvious premium SUVs	Uncomfortable ride
Wonderful-sounding petrol engines	Cramped for an SUV of this size
Slick-shifting automatic gearbox	Ruinously expensive to run

Quick Summary

The Maserati Levante (2017-2024) is an ambitious Italian luxury SUV that attempts to blend Ferrari-sourced performance with premium comfort. Based on the Ghibli saloon platform, it features a striking front grille with the iconic Trident badge, though the rear styling is more generic. The cabin showcases Italian craftsmanship through partnerships with Ermenegildo Zegna for leather upholstery and Giorgetti for woodwork, creating an aesthetically impressive interior. However, the Levante struggles with practicality, offering a cramped cabin despite its generous external dimensions and a comparatively tight 580-litre boot that trails rivals significantly.

Powered by Ferrari-derived V6 and V8 petrol engines, the Levante delivers impressive performance and wonderful engine acoustics with a slick-shifting automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the chassis feels unresolved, never settling comfortably between sporting SUV and luxurious GT. Running costs are substantial, with even the most economical model achieving only 21.4mpg, whilst the twin-turbo V8 Trofeo manages just 17.7mpg. Consumables wear quickly on high-performance vehicles, and insurance, tax, and maintenance are all expensive. Despite its exclusivity and Ferrari engines, the Levante is outclassed by more polished rivals in comfort, dynamism, interior quality, space, and infotainment user-friendliness.

Best for: Buyers seeking a rare and exclusive luxury SUV with distinctive Italian styling and Ferrari-sourced performance, willing to accept higher running costs.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising practicality, comfort, fuel economy, or cutting-edge infotainment systems, or buyers comparing against more established premium SUV competitors.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Levante if: You seek a rare and exclusive luxury SUV with distinctive Italian styling and Ferrari-sourced performance, willing to accept higher running costs and compromises on practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise practicality, comfort, fuel economy, cutting-edge infotainment, or prefer more established premium SUV competitors with superior interior quality and space.

Competitive Position: The Maserati Levante is an admirably ambitious first effort in the luxury SUV segment, but it is outclassed by more polished rivals in nearly every area. Whilst its Ferrari-derived engines deliver wonderful acoustics and impressive performance, and its Italian design partnerships create visual appeal, the Levante suffers from an uncomfortable ride, cramped interior, poor infotainment, and ruinous running costs. The Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, and BMW X5 all offer superior comfort, dynamism, interior quality, and practicality. The Levante's exclusivity and distinctive styling appeal to those seeking something different, but it requires buyers to accept significant compromises in exchange for rarity and performance.
