Mazda CX-5 (2012-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Nimble handling and precise steering	Petrol engines are a bit weedy at low revs
Every version is well equipped	The cabin doesn't match the finish quality of premium rivals
Deserves its reputation for reliability	A Honda CR-V has more space for people and luggage

Quick Summary

The Mazda CX-5 (2012-2017), the first-generation model, is a compact SUV that successfully combines sharp handling with practical family-friendly features. Smaller and more efficient than its predecessor, the CX-7, it offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines to suit different driving needs. With 503 litres of boot space, plentiful passenger room, and a well-appointed cabin across all trim levels, the CX-5 delivers impressive versatility. The car handles with verve and agility, whilst the higher-powered diesel engines provide plenty of overtaking punch and mid-range pull.

Running costs are low by SUV standards, particularly with the front-wheel-drive diesel option, with real-world fuel economy ranging from the mid-40s to low 40s depending on engine choice and drivetrain. The CX-5 boasts a strong reputation for reliability and comes well-equipped as standard, featuring dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, cruise control, and parking sensors even on entry-level models. A 2015 facelift brought improved cabin quality and additional technology options, including blind spot monitoring and a larger infotainment screen. The main drawbacks are excessive wind and road noise at higher speeds and cabin plastics that lack the premium quality of some rivals.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, reliable, and well-equipped SUV with sharp handling, those prioritising low running costs, and buyers wanting a sensible balance between performance and practicality.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum interior space (a Honda CR-V offers more), drivers preferring premium cabin finishes, or those wanting a petrol engine with strong low-end performance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CX-5 if: You're seeking a practical, reliable, and well-equipped SUV with sharp handling, prioritising low running costs, or wanting a sensible balance between performance and everyday practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, prefer premium cabin finishes, or need a petrol engine with strong low-end performance.

Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-5 (2012-2017) is an excellent used SUV choice, offering nimble handling, precise steering, and impressive reliability that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson score highly with users, the CX-5 stands out for its superior driving dynamics and well-equipped standard specification. The Ford Kuga, though popular, scores lower with experts. The CX-5's low running costs, generous equipment levels, and strong reputation for reliability make it one of the best used SUVs available, particularly for buyers valuing a blend of practicality and engaging driving manners.
