Mazda CX-5 (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Agile and involving to drive | No seven-seat option |
| Eye-catching looks | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Diesels combine strong performance and fuel economy | Petrols feel a bit gutless at low revs |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-5 (2017-present) is a standout in the SUV segment, offering a truly sporty driving experience thanks to its agile handling, direct steering, and slick gearchange. Engineered by the creators of the MX-5, it boasts superior driving dynamics compared to many rivals, making it a "feel-good" car with eye-catching styling. While not always the most comfortable in its class, its ride is supple enough, combining nimble performance with the practicality expected of an SUV.
Inside, the CX-5 features a classy, well-built interior with an intuitive touchscreen and clear instrumentation, offering generous standard equipment across its SE-L, Sport, and GT Sport trims. Practicality includes a 522-litre boot and versatile 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, though there's no seven-seat option and the boot isn't the largest. Engine choices include a 163bhp 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesels (148bhp or 181bhp), with the diesel offering better fuel economy (40-45 mpg for the 150bhp variant). Running costs are reasonable, with a durable timing chain and mid-range servicing expenses, making it a reliable and hassle-free choice despite the petrol engine's low-rev grunt.
Best for: Drivers seeking an SUV with genuinely sporty handling, eye-catching design, a well-built interior, and robust reliability.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing a seven-seat SUV, those prioritising the largest possible boot space, or drivers who prefer strong low-down grunt from a petrol engine.

The Verdict
You should buy the CX-5 if: You're seeking an SUV with genuinely sporty handling, eye-catching design, a well-built interior, and robust reliability.
Consider alternatives if: You need a seven-seat SUV, prioritise the largest possible boot space, or prefer strong low-down grunt from a petrol engine.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-5 stands out in the crowded SUV market primarily for its engaging driving dynamics and distinctive, attractive styling, setting it apart from many rivals. While it may not offer a seven-seat option or the largest boot, and its petrol engine can feel underpowered at low revs, its well-crafted interior, intuitive technology, and strong reliability make it a compelling choice. For buyers prioritising driving pleasure and a premium feel in a family SUV, especially with the more efficient diesel engines, the CX-5 offers a hassle-free and stylish alternative to segment leaders.

4.7 Overall rating
(27 reviews)Lovely comfortable ride with plenty of power if you need it. A very reliable, modern car with all the current features. My favourite is the heads up display and also the infotainment capabilities on screen. I’m very happy with the CX5.
This car was one of many SUVs I looked at and it had everything and more. But unfortunately Ive gone with a Renault kadjar as I owned one previously.
Well made, well appointed, A joy to drive. My second, would I buy a third?...... definitely! Antonymac

Ticked all the boxes. Great kit great looks fabulous to drive. Handles more like a car than a big SUV.
