Mazda MX-5 Mk1 (1990-1997) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Pure driving thrills	Rust can take hold and be expensive to put right
Hood goes up and down easily	The 1995 1.6 is rather slow
Mechanically simple so straightforward to look after	If you want an auto, you will have to look hard

Quick Summary

The Mazda MX-5 Mk1 (1990-1997) is a fabulous two-seater sports car that delivers pure driving thrills with lively, predictable rear-wheel drive handling, quick accurate steering, and a keen engine with a fruity exhaust note. Launched as an homage to classic British roadsters but without their unreliability, the MX-5 was an instant global hit and has acquired cult status. Early models featured a 1.6-litre engine producing 115bhp, replaced in 1994 by a more powerful 1.8-litre with 130bhp. The car is mechanically simple, with an easily operated hood, pop-up headlights, and one of the all-time great sports car designs.

Practicality is limited to a modest 125-litre boot and two seats, but the MX-5 is simple and reliable enough for everyday use. Running costs are reasonable, with fuel consumption ranging from the mid-20s to high 30s mpg depending on driving style. However, rust can be a serious issue, particularly in UK cars affecting rear wheel arches and sills, requiring specialist repairs. Budget for eventual hood replacement, brake caliper maintenance, and periodic cambelt service. The MX-5 community is vibrant, offering discounted parts, insurance, and freely dispensed advice through clubs and online forums.

Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking spirited, involving motoring at all speeds, classic car collectors, and those who appreciate iconic sports car design and simplicity.

Not ideal for: Buyers needing practical storage space, those seeking automatic transmission options, or those unwilling to budget for potential rust repairs and maintenance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MX-5 Mk1 if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking spirited, involving motoring at all speeds, a classic car collector, or someone who appreciates iconic sports car design and mechanical simplicity.

Consider alternatives if: You need practical storage space, require an automatic transmission option, or are unwilling to budget for potential rust repairs and ongoing maintenance.

Competitive Position: The Mazda MX-5 Mk1 (1990-1997) stands out as the finest driving experience among classic roadsters, delivering pure thrills with its responsive handling and engaging character. Whilst rivals like the MG TF offer similar appeal and the Ford Fiesta provides modern practicality, the MX-5 Mk1 remains unmatched for its combination of driving purity, iconic design, and mechanical simplicity. Its higher expert rating reflects its superior driving dynamics and enduring appeal as a modern classic. However, prospective buyers must be prepared for potential rust issues and maintenance costs, making thorough pre-purchase inspection essential.
