Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Irresistibly fun to drive | A bit cramped for tall drivers |
| Extremely reliable | Early cars have less safety kit than later models |
| Affordable to buy and run for a sports car | The boot is small |
Quick Summary
The Mazda MX-5 (2015-present), the world's best-selling roadster, is a triumph of lightweight engineering, designed for pure driving enjoyment. Roughly the same size and weight as the original 1996 model, it prioritises driving experience over practicality. Its stylish two-seater cabin is well-made but tight, especially for taller individuals, and the 130-litre boot is small. However, this focus allows for agile handling and spirited performance with modest engines, making it a true driver's car.
Equipped with smooth and eager Skyactiv petrol engines (1.5-litre or 2.0-litre), a slick six-speed manual gearbox, and precise steering, the MX-5 delivers an engaging ride. Running costs are remarkably low for a sports car, with excellent fuel economy often exceeding 40mpg, reasonable road tax, and manageable servicing and insurance costs. While early models had less advanced safety tech, later trims improved this. The MX-5 remains an affordable, reliable, and immensely fun sports car that doesn't demand huge horsepower for a rewarding experience.
Best for: Drivers seeking an irresistibly fun, reliable, and affordable two-seater sports car for daily enjoyment without excessive running costs or demanding expert driving skills.
Not ideal for: Tall individuals, buyers prioritising cabin space or a large boot, or those who require the most advanced safety features in earlier model years.

The Verdict
You should buy the MX-5 if: You're seeking an irresistibly fun, reliable, and affordable two-seater sports car for daily enjoyment without excessive running costs or demanding expert driving skills.
Consider alternatives if: You are a tall individual, prioritise cabin space or a large boot, or require the most advanced safety features in earlier model years.
Competitive Position: The Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) firmly holds its position as the world's best-selling roadster, delivering an unparalleled blend of driving fun, reliability, and affordability in the sports car segment. While rivals might offer more cabin space or practicality, the MX-5's lightweight design, engaging engines, and low running costs make it a unique and highly rewarding choice for enthusiasts. It proves that immense driving pleasure doesn't require huge horsepower or a hefty price tag.

4.6 Overall rating
(27 reviews)Fun days out in a car that was initially stripped back to the essentials. Later models come with some toys but it retains the ability to make you smile.
Just scrapped a 1996 MGF. This 2006 MX5 is infinitely a better sports car in every way. Good value too.
Great value, low cost of ownership as a sports car. They do what they are designed for really well. They are not a fast n furious sports car, like a Porsche Boxster, but the zip along nicely. 1.8 a bit wheezy, so my advice is go for a well specced 2.0.
Best available of its type, brilliant fun, good value, pity about the rust problems with both front and rear subframes, and the rain drainage channels leading to real problems in front of and behind doors. I will only consider electric hard roof versions now .
Love these little fun sport cars. Had one previously. Collecting next this one on Friday. All gone well, so far. Only issue is that the heated seats do not function
