Mazda3 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stunning styling for a family hatchback | Far from the most spacious car in its class |
| High-quality fit and finish | Naturally aspirated petrol engines need lots of revs |
| Satisfying to drive, with nimble handling and a comfortable ride | Relatively high emissions |
Quick Summary
The Mazda3 (2019-present) is a strikingly designed family hatchback, drawing inspiration from concept cars to create soft, shapely curves. While its rear seats can feel dark and a little cramped, and it's not the most spacious in its class, the cabin boasts an appealing, high-quality, and simple aesthetic. The boot offers 358 litres (hatchback) or 450 litres (saloon), which is respectable, and it includes practical features like Isofix points.
Driving the Mazda3 is a calm, composed, and mature experience, with light, precise controls and a comfortable ride that makes long journeys effortless. Mazda uniquely offers naturally-aspirated petrol engines (Skyactiv-G or Skyactiv-X) without turbochargers, requiring drivers to rev them more for power. The infotainment system uses an 8.8-inch display controlled by a rotary dial, eschewing touchscreens for a safer approach. Running costs are generally reasonable, with the Skyactiv-X engine being the most economical at 48.7mpg, though emissions are higher than some hybrid rivals.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise stunning design, a high-quality interior, a satisfying and composed driving experience, and enjoy revving an engine.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear passenger space, those who prefer turbocharged engines with strong low-end torque, or company car drivers prioritising the lowest possible emissions and BIK tax.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda3 if: You prioritise stunning design, a high-quality interior, a satisfying and composed driving experience, and enjoy revving an engine.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum rear passenger space, prefer turbocharged engines with strong low-end torque, or if you're a company car driver prioritising the lowest possible emissions and BIK tax.
Competitive Position: The Mazda3 (2019-present) stands out in the family hatchback segment with its distinctive styling and premium-feeling interior, offering a genuinely engaging and comfortable driving experience. While it may not lead its class in rear passenger space or offer the turbocharged power delivery of some rivals, its unique approach to engine technology and high-quality cabin make it a compelling choice for those seeking something different. It's a thoroughly likeable car for those prepared to overlook its minor shortcomings in practicality and emissions for a more involved driving feel.

(13 reviews)Love the Mazda 3, nippy wee car, great spec and looks good.
I really love the features of the car. I personally got the Sport GT cause I wanted everything the car has to offer, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, Bose sound system, 360 degree surround view camera, e.t.c. You will have to pay a lot more to get these in other car models. The car is fun to drive.
I chose a Mazda 3 Tamura 2013 , the car is in superb condition. about the price for a low mileage car. It has many extras and the inside is beautiful too. Its a fabulous car to drive. There is nothing l can think of that is missing. I havent looked at any other makes , l wanted one similar in size to my old Astra, but this is much better quality.
I love the Mazda3, Matt who looked after me was so helpful and lovely to talk to, I’ve always had VW but thought for a change and a longer car as I have a baby, I absolutely love it, smoothest drive I’ve ever had, really comfy seats, I don’t think I’ll change to vw again !
Lovely car, very reliable. Nice interior, large boot. Lots of nice features ie electric folding mirrors, control of wipers speed, all electric windows, electric windows block to stop child playing with buttons.
