Mercedes-AMG SL (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Glamorous looks | Hugely expensive |
| Really good to drive | Adaptive cruise control costs extra |
| Lavishly equipped | Rear seats cramped |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-AMG SL (2023-present) is a two-seat open-top sports car that blends luxury grand-touring with serious performance. This seventh-generation model represents a significant evolution, becoming more aggressive and sports-focused than its predecessors. With its striking long-bonnet design, fabric soft-top roof, and the addition of occasional rear seats, the SL offers a distinctive alternative to rivals like the Porsche 911 Cabriolet. Engine options include a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 375bhp in the SL43, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 469bhp in the SL55, and 577bhp in the SL63. All models feature a nine-speed automatic gearbox, with V8 variants offering four-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering for the first time.
The SL delivers impressive driving dynamics with theatrical performance and refined comfort, making it an effortless long-distance cruiser. Handling is playful and engaging, though not quite as sharp as the Porsche 911. The cabin is beautifully finished with deeply sculpted seats, and the 231-litre boot provides adequate space for weekend trips. Technology is comprehensive, featuring an 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen with augmented reality navigation, Burmester sound system, and wireless charging. However, the SL commands premium pricing—the SL63 exceeds £170,000—and fuel economy is modest at 21.4mpg for V8 models. Depreciation can be painful, particularly on the SL63, making nearly-new examples a more sensible investment.
Best for: Buyers seeking a glamorous, well-equipped roadster with theatrical performance and refined comfort, and those wanting a distinctive alternative to the Porsche 911 Cabriolet.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising fuel economy, or drivers concerned about depreciation and running costs on V8 models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-AMG SL | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 19.9% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 8-Series Convertible | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 37.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Bentley Continental GTC | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 911 Cabriolet | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 25.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the SL if: You desire a glamorous, well-equipped roadster with theatrical performance and refined comfort, and want a distinctive alternative to the Porsche 911 Cabriolet.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy, wish to minimise depreciation, or are concerned about running costs on V8 models.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-AMG SL (2023-present) is a compelling luxury roadster that combines stunning aesthetics with impressive driving dynamics and lavish equipment. Whilst it commands premium pricing and doesn't quite match the Porsche 911's handling finesse or the BMW 8-Series' value proposition, the SL's theatrical performance, refined comfort, and distinctive design make it a highly desirable choice for those seeking something special. Nearly-new or used examples offer the best value, allowing buyers to enjoy the SL's impressive thrill factor whilst avoiding the steepest depreciation. For buyers with sufficient budget and a desire for glamour, performance, and refinement, the SL represents a worthy investment.

What people say
I love my Mercedes-AMG SL43! I was unsure if I would like the ride and handling of my car after watching YouTube test videos on the latest (R232) SL43 but I need not have been. As for the new dashboard, the new switches and buttons are a refreshing change and an absolute pleasure to use! The buttons work without a problem with the ingenious haptic feedback that is given. Mercedes often takes the lead in car manufacture. Soft close doors first appeared on the S-class now Rolls Royce, Bentley and many others have adopted them. The new Mercedes switch gear will no doubt be adopted by other manufacturers eventually. I cannot recommend my (R232) SL43 enough. It is in fact replacing my SLK 280 from 2007 which has only covered 16k miles so I am letting my sister have it in her family as a future classic. The SL43 rides and handles beautifully and if, like me, you want a replacement for an SLK or SLC this is the right car for you. The new fabric hood makes it easier to style a great car which looks stunningly like the original 300 SL roadster from the 1950's and the SL43 carries on where the 190 SL and SLK and SLC left off! The SL43 is a stunning well made car that I have no hesitation in recommending! It's also great as a 2+2 for children in the back of the car!
Excellent vehicle with a very high specification. Couldn’t be happier.
Quality grand tourer with a touch of madness
The AMG line Mercedes SL400 is a superb sports convertible with great acceleration, handling and exciting to drive. I covered 3,000 miles touring Scotland on two weeks holiday and felt completely safe and comfortable at all times.
Absolute pleasure to drive and can see the car becoming a future classic
