The original Mercedes-Benz A-Class was a genuinely innovative small car, combining compact dimensions with impressive interior space and clever packaging. Even today, its upright driving position, flexible seating and easy manoeuvrability make it feel surprisingly practical around town.

However, while facelifted models improved quality and equipment levels, the 1998-2004 A-Class (know as the ‘W168’ version) has developed a reputation for expensive faults and unpredictable reliability as it gets older. Buy carefully, budget sensibly and a good one could still be an interesting and distinctive used hatchback. However, there are easier and less risky small cars to own.
