Mercedes C-Class (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
The PHEV has a class-leading electric range	Not as sharp to drive as a BMW 3 Series
Beautifully finished interior	There are roomier cars for less money
MBUX infotainment system looks stunning	Bland styling

Quick Summary

The Mercedes C-Class is now in its fifth generation, offering a choice of mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plus a plug-in hybrid with an impressive 68-mile official WLTP pure-electric range—the longest in its class by a significant margin. All variants feature a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The C-Class boasts understated classiness with a high-quality interior finish and the excellent MBUX infotainment system featuring an 11.9-inch digital driver's display and 12-inch touchscreen. However, styling is rather bland and can be easily confused with the larger E-Class. Note that four-wheel drive is only available on high-performance AMG models; all other variants are rear-wheel drive.

The C300e plug-in hybrid is particularly compelling for company car users, falling into a lower tax band than most other PHEVs whilst offering superior efficiency. The diesel C220d achieves up to 60mpg, whilst petrol variants return around 40mpg. The car is well equipped as standard, with entry-level Sport models including LED headlights, reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, and heated seats. Practicality is adequate but not exceptional; the saloon offers a 455-litre boot (reduced to 315 litres on the PHEV), whilst the estate provides 360-490 litres depending on variant. Servicing costs are fairly expensive at around £400-£450 per service at a main dealership.

Best for: Premium buyers seeking a refined, well-equipped executive saloon or estate with excellent technology, particularly those interested in the PHEV's class-leading electric range and lower company car tax.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising sharp handling (BMW 3 Series excels here), maximum interior space, four-wheel drive on non-performance models, or budget-conscious buyers seeking better value alternatives.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C-Class if: You value premium quality, advanced technology, and the class-leading PHEV electric range, particularly if you're a company car user seeking lower tax benefits.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling (BMW 3 Series), maximum interior space, four-wheel drive on non-performance models, or superior value for money.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes C-Class is a solid contender in the compact executive saloon and estate market, offering beautiful interior finishes, excellent infotainment, and the standout C300e PHEV with its impressive 68-mile electric range. Whilst the BMW 3 Series edges ahead for driving dynamics and the Jaguar XE offers slightly better value, the C-Class remains a refined and well-equipped choice. Its main weakness is bland exterior styling and limited practicality compared to roomier alternatives. For buyers prioritising technology, comfort, and plug-in hybrid efficiency, the C-Class is an indulgent and capable option that's unlikely to disappoint.
