The GLA is Mercedes’ entry in the exceptionally popular small SUV market. The original version launched in 2014 and was a strong seller, despite some flaws (buyers just love premium compact SUVs), and it was replaced by the second generation – a much better all-round car – in 2020. It’s a handsome thing, with sleek, pumped-up styling, it’s good to drive (especially the stonking AMG performance models) and has an excellent infotainment system. It has some stiff competition, though, in the form of the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Volvo XC40, all of which vie for buyers’ attention in a packed sector.
