Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Still available with diesel and petrol engines	Mercedes still has an iffy reputation for reliability
Much sharper to drive than its predecessor	There is only one hybrid version
Superb infotainment system	Headroom is a little tight in the back

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (2020-present) is a vastly superior second-generation offering that rectifies the fundamental flaws of its predecessor. The styling is now plausibly SUV-like rather than resembling a jacked-up hatchback, whilst the chunkier dimensions translate to more interior space and a bigger, more versatile boot. Cabin quality is competitive within its class, and the elevated driving position appeals to those preferring SUVs over conventional hatchbacks. The GLA offers a 487-litre boot (diesel), expandable to 1,422 litres with rear seats folded, and a 750kg unbraked towing capacity.

The driving experience is significantly more competitive than before, with a comfortable ride and fairly sharp handling, though low-speed fidgetiness remains. The engine range spans sensible to sensational, with most delivering good fuel economy. The GLA 180 petrol achieves 42.8mpg, whilst the GLA 200d diesel returns 49.6-52.3mpg. The plug-in hybrid GLA 250 e offers 43-45 miles of electric range. The captivating infotainment system, featuring a 10.25-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is a standout feature. However, Mercedes' reliability reputation and limited hybrid options are considerations.

Best for: Tech-savvy buyers seeking premium infotainment, those preferring elevated driving positions, and drivers wanting a choice of diesel, petrol, or hybrid powertrains in a compact SUV.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum headroom in the rear, those concerned about Mercedes reliability, or those seeking multiple hybrid options.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the GLA if: You prioritise premium infotainment technology, prefer an elevated driving position, or seek a choice of diesel, petrol, or hybrid powertrains in a compact SUV.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear headroom, are concerned about Mercedes reliability, or want multiple hybrid options.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (2020-present) is a strong contender in the compact premium SUV segment, offering excellent infotainment, sharp handling, and versatile powertrain options. Whilst the BMW X1 edges ahead with superior user ratings and the Audi Q3 offers comparable value, the GLA distinguishes itself through its superb technology and driving dynamics. The Volvo XC40 presents a worthy alternative for those seeking Scandinavian design and reliability. The GLA's premium cabin quality and infotainment system make it particularly appealing to tech-focused buyers, though potential reliability concerns and limited rear headroom warrant consideration against rivals.
