The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a luxury roadster with proper grand touring appeal, helped by a folding metal hardtop that makes it feel like both a coupe and a convertible. It’s beautifully built, impressively comfortable and still feels special today – particularly in later SL 400 and SL 500 forms.
It isn’t as sharp to drive as a Porsche 911, and AMG versions can feel like they have more performance than the chassis can really cope with. However, as a fast, elegant and deeply desirable used luxury car, the SL still makes a huge amount of sense. Buy carefully, keep on top of maintenance, and you’ll own one of Mercedes-Benz’s great modern classics.

The AMG line Mercedes SL400 is a superb sports convertible with great acceleration, handling and exciting to drive. I covered 3,000 miles touring Scotland on two weeks holiday and felt completely safe and comfortable at all times.
