An institution, the Mercedes-Benz SL is one of those cars that seems to have been around forever. The letters in its name actually stand for Sport Leicht (light), which harks back to the SL’s origins as a proper sports car, as opposed to the grand touring boulevardier it’s become in its more recent iterations. An incredibly able, luxurious all-rounder, this stylish, fast and capable roadster is no longer available new from Mercedes-Benz with an all-new one anticipated to arrive in 2022.

The AMG line Mercedes SL400 is a superb sports convertible with great acceleration, handling and exciting to drive. I covered 3,000 miles touring Scotland on two weeks holiday and felt completely safe and comfortable at all times.

The features are great. It could do with keyless entry and start and having the top to open and close on the move I would think.

The car is inspired by its heritage, and has a modern design in keeping with the super luxe designation. It’s not a super car, but a wonderful car. The 350 has adequate acceleration, good mpg and exceptional style and equipment. I would have expected the wind break to be electric, but no, it’s an optional extra. The real set apart feature is the folding hard top roof., not fast and only when stationary. Love the sport or comfort mode. It’s only a two seater and has limited baggage room. So Grand Tourer it’s not. But it’s still fun.
