Mercedes-AMG SL (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Glamorous styling	Hugely expensive
Really enjoyable to drive	Not as agile or exciting as a Porsche 911
Loaded with equipment	Rear seats are cramped

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-AMG SL (2026) is a luxurious 2+2-seat open-top roadster that balances grand-touring comfort with serious sports car performance. This seventh-generation model, known as the R232, features a fabric roof that opens in 15 seconds at speeds up to 37mph, maintaining a sleek cabin profile whilst accommodating occasional rear seats for small children. The engine line-up is exclusively AMG-focused, ranging from a 375bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in the SL43, through to a 577bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in the SL63, and culminating in the flagship SL63 S E-Performance with 805bhp combined output from its V8 and electric motor. All models feature a nine-speed automatic gearbox, with V8 variants offering 4Matic all-wheel drive for the first time in SL history.

The SL represents a more aggressive, sportier evolution than previous generations, featuring rear-wheel steering on the SL55 and SL63, plus AMG Active Ride Control on the range-topping model. Refinement is impressive, with a beautifully finished interior, deeply sculpted supportive seats, and one of the best infotainment systems available. Boot space is generous at 231 litres (110 litres on the E-Hybrid), and practical features include keyless entry, remote boot closing, and a nose-lift system on SL63 variants. Running costs are a consideration, with the SL43 achieving 31mpg whilst V8 models manage 21mpg. Depreciation can be painful, particularly on the SL63, making nearly-new or used examples more financially sensible.

Best for: Buyers seeking a theatrical, luxurious drop-top sports car with superb equipment and refinement, those wanting an alternative to the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, and drivers prioritising comfort and technology alongside performance.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the finest handling dynamics, buyers concerned about depreciation, or those requiring practical rear seating for regular use.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the SL if: You desire a glamorous, theatrical drop-top sports car with exceptional equipment and refinement, seek an alternative to the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, or prioritise comfort and technology alongside performance.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, seeking the finest handling dynamics, concerned about depreciation, or require practical rear seating for regular use.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-AMG SL (2026) is a compelling proposition in the luxury drop-top sports car segment, offering stunning styling, impressive performance, and lavish equipment. Whilst it doesn't quite match the Porsche 911 Cabriolet for handling finesse or value retention, it provides a more theatrical and comfortable alternative. The SL's V8 engines deliver genuine thrills, and the cabin is beautifully appointed with cutting-edge technology. However, the premium pricing and middling reliability record of recent Mercedes models temper its appeal. For those who love the SL's character and have the budget, it's an excellent choice; for others, a nearly-new or used example offers better value without sacrificing the car's impressive awe-factor.
