Mitsubishi Mirage (2013-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Low running costs	Bland looks
Like most Mitsubishis, it should be reliable	Poor to drive
Respectable economy and emissions	Low-rent cabin finish

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi Mirage (2013-2019) is a small hatchback that sits between traditional city cars and superminis, offering practicality without pretension. It features a 235-litre boot (910 litres with rear seats folded) and comfortable front seats, though rear legroom is tight for taller passengers. The car is available with 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre petrol engines, with the latter being more common in used examples. An automatic CVT gearbox is available but best avoided due to noise and inefficiency. The Mirage prioritises affordability and economy over driving engagement or visual appeal.

Running costs are genuinely low, with the 1.2-litre engine achieving up to 68.9mpg (56.5mpg under WLTP testing) and CO2 emissions of 113-127g/km. Road tax is reasonable, with post-2017 examples paying a flat £165 rate, whilst insurance groups range from 14 to 21 out of 50. However, the Mirage suffers from uninspiring handling, fidgety suspension, and a dated interior with cheap-feeling materials. Mitsubishi has ceased UK sales, though dealers continue to provide servicing and warranty support for existing vehicles.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an economical, reliable runabout with low running costs and minimal maintenance requirements.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving enjoyment, modern styling, premium cabin quality, or character in their vehicle.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mirage if: You're seeking an economical, reliable runabout with minimal running costs and straightforward maintenance requirements.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving enjoyment, modern styling, premium cabin quality, or character in your vehicle.

Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Mirage (2013-2019) is a competent but uninspiring choice in the city car segment. Whilst it delivers low running costs and Mitsubishi reliability, it falls short against rivals like the Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo, which offer superior driving dynamics, more appealing design, and better user satisfaction. The Volkswagen Up also provides a more engaging drive and premium feel. The Mirage is best suited to buyers prioritising economy and simplicity over enjoyment or style, making it a pragmatic rather than an exciting purchase.
