Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pioneering plug-in hybrid promises low running costs for the right buyer | Dated infotainment and interior finish |
| Choice of five or seven seats if you don't buy the hybrid | Early PHEVs have a smaller battery than post-2019 cars |
| Plenty of room for passengers and their luggage | Dull to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is a durable and practical SUV that offers honest, workhorse appeal at a good price. Its main selling point is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, which uniquely combined big-SUV versatility with very low CO2 emissions and pure electric running for 20-25 miles in real-world driving. The 2018 facelift brought a larger battery, improved materials, better infotainment, and enhanced refinement across all models. With masses of interior space, flexible seating options (including seven-seat layouts on non-hybrid models), and a spacious boot, the Outlander delivers genuine practicality for families and those needing versatility.
However, the Outlander now feels dated compared to newer rivals. The infotainment system lags behind competitors, interior materials lack polish, and the driving experience is underwhelming—body roll is noticeable, the ride can be chattery, and the petrol engine is boomy under acceleration. The diesel option offers reasonable performance but lacks refinement, whilst the non-hybrid petrol with CVT automatic is best avoided. The PHEV remains the pick of the range, offering competitive running costs if charged regularly, though fuel economy benefits diminish on long motorway journeys. As a used buy, it represents solid value, particularly the PHEV variant for company car drivers seeking low tax costs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, practical SUV; company car drivers interested in the PHEV's low running costs and tax benefits; families needing flexible seating and generous boot space.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium interior quality, modern infotainment, engaging driving dynamics, or covering large distances without regular charging (PHEV).
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Outlander | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.2% | 4.1/5 |

| Nissan X-Trail | 3/5 | 4.9/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Outlander if: You're seeking a spacious, practical SUV on a budget; interested in the PHEV's low running costs and tax benefits; or need flexible seating and generous boot space for family use.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, modern infotainment, engaging driving dynamics, or plan to cover large distances without regular charging (PHEV).
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) offers genuine practicality and value as a used buy, particularly the pioneering PHEV variant. However, rivals have caught up and now highlight how dated the Outlander feels in infotainment, interior finish, and driving engagement. The Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe are better to drive and nicer to sit in, whilst the Nissan X-Trail offers comparable practicality. For company car drivers, the PHEV's low tax costs remain compelling, but new alternatives like the Ford Kuga and Volkswagen Tiguan now offer similar plug-in hybrid benefits in smaller, more modern packages. As a used purchase, the Outlander remains a sensible, durable choice for budget-conscious families prioritising space over style.

(17 reviews)Customers say
The Mitsubishi Outlander is appreciated by owners for its spacious interior, hybrid efficiency, and overall reliability across multiple model years. Many drivers find the Outlander to be versatile, handling well in various conditions and offering ample cargo space. However, some concerns have been raised regarding its sporty driving experience and the potential for clutch issues in certain models. While the hybrid variants are favored for their eco-friendly features, the model line faces scrutiny for parts availability in some regions.

What people say
No thrills or gadgets or gizmos. Engine is solid and will last me a lifetime time if serviced yearly. Quick when it needs to be, towing capability is second to none for other cars in its price range.
Reliable and roomy family car, dog friendly and affordable excellent tow car.
A do everything car. This is our 4th Outlander and to date all have been 100% reliable. Just a brilliant vehicle.
Wonderful plug in hybrid if you work close to home you can drive on electric saving money and it’s still one of a few hybrids you can tow with
What a car!!! All the comforts a driver needs plenty room in the back and the boot. The hybrid system works a treat and I can go to work and back on a full charge so it costs me literally nothing in fuel.
