Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pioneering plug-in hybrid promises low running costs for the right buyer | Dated infotainment and interior finish |
| Choice of five or seven seats if you don't buy the hybrid | Early PHEVs have a smaller battery than post-2019 cars |
| Plenty of room for passengers and their luggage | Dull to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is a durable and practical workhorse SUV offering excellent value, space, and versatility. Its standout feature was the pioneering plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which for years provided a unique combination of large SUV practicality with low CO2 emissions and an electric range of around 20-25 miles. This made it a popular choice, especially for company car drivers seeking low tax bills. The non-hybrid diesel and petrol models are harder to recommend against more refined and modern rivals.
A 2018 facelift improved the Outlander with a bigger battery for the PHEV, better interior materials, and an updated infotainment system, though it still lags behind competitors in cabin polish and tech. With Mitsubishi's official UK departure in 2021, the Outlander is now a convincing used buy with plentiful availability. Running costs for the PHEV are very low if charged regularly, and it uniquely offers CHAdeMO fast charging. However, its fuel economy benefits diminish on long motorway journeys where the petrol engine is relied upon.
Best for: Buyers needing a spacious, practical SUV on a budget, company car drivers seeking low tax (PHEV), and those who can charge regularly to maximise electric running.
Not ideal for: Drivers who prioritise an engaging drive, a premium cabin feel, or the latest infotainment technology.

The Verdict
You should buy the Outlander if: You need a spacious, practical, and affordable large SUV, and can take advantage of the PHEV's low running costs through regular charging.
Consider alternatives if: A premium interior, modern technology, and an enjoyable driving experience are high on your priority list.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander carved a niche as a practical, spacious SUV with a then-unique and highly compelling PHEV option. While newer rivals now offer more refinement, better driving dynamics, and superior interiors, the Outlander remains a strong value proposition on the used market. Its combination of space, seven-seat availability (on non-hybrids), and the potential for very low running costs with the PHEV keeps it relevant for budget-conscious families.

(44 reviews)Reliable and roomy family car, dog friendly and affordable excellent tow car.
A do everything car. This is our 4th Outlander and to date all have been 100% reliable. Just a brilliant vehicle.
Wonderful plug in hybrid if you work close to home you can drive on electric saving money and it’s still one of a few hybrids you can tow with
What a car!!! All the comforts a driver needs plenty room in the back and the boot. The hybrid system works a treat and I can go to work and back on a full charge so it costs me literally nothing in fuel.
This car is brilliant. So easy to drive and comfortable. Going round corners can be a bit boat like but great around town and for them short journeys. I get about 26 miles from a single charge more if I use eco mode and I am on a single journey. Smaller shorter journeys tend to bring the average down a little but still great for the school run
