Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pioneering plug-in hybrid promises low running costs for the right buyer | Dated infotainment and interior finish |
| Choice of five or seven seats if you don't buy the hybrid | Early PHEVs have a smaller battery than post-2019 cars |
| Plenty of room for passengers and their luggage | Dull to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is an honest, durable, and practical SUV, renowned for its pioneering plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. For years, the PHEV offered a unique combination of low CO2 emissions, 20-25 miles of electric range, and robust SUV versatility at an accessible price point. It provides generous passenger and boot space, including a 463-litre boot in PHEV models, and a seven-seat option for non-hybrid versions. While its interior and infotainment may feel dated compared to newer rivals, equipment levels are decent, with later models featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Driving dynamics are functional rather than engaging, with a somewhat chattery ride. However, the PHEV stands out for its low running costs, being VED free and offering significant savings if charged regularly. Diesel models achieve around 35-40mpg. Despite Mitsubishi officially ceasing sales in 2021, the Outlander remains a convincing used buy, offering solid value and ease of ownership, particularly the PHEV for budget-conscious buyers who can maximise its electric range.
Best for: Drivers seeking an honest, workhorse SUV at a good price; buyers prioritising low running costs and company car tax benefits (PHEV); those needing plenty of passenger and boot space, or a seven-seat option (non-hybrid); used car buyers looking for a durable and practical SUV.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics or a refined ride; those looking for a cutting-edge infotainment system or premium interior finish; drivers who frequently cover long distances on motorways (PHEV fuel economy).

The Verdict
You should buy the Outlander if: You're on a budget and seeking a durable, practical SUV; you frequently make shorter journeys and can regularly charge the PHEV for maximum efficiency; or you need a car with plenty of space for passengers and luggage, or a seven-seat option (non-hybrid).
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, a refined ride, or a modern, polished interior; you cover long distances on motorways regularly, as the PHEV's fuel economy benefits will be reduced; or you need the latest infotainment technology.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) holds a unique position, especially the PHEV variant, which pioneered affordable plug-in hybrid technology in the SUV segment. While newer rivals have caught up in terms of interior refinement, infotainment, and driving dynamics, the Outlander remains a strong contender as a used buy due to its durability, practicality, and the PHEV's low running costs for the right user. It offers excellent value for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, versatile family SUV.

A do everything car. This is our 4th Outlander and to date all have been 100% reliable. Just a brilliant vehicle.
Wonderful plug in hybrid if you work close to home you can drive on electric saving money and it’s still one of a few hybrids you can tow with
What a car!!! All the comforts a driver needs plenty room in the back and the boot. The hybrid system works a treat and I can go to work and back on a full charge so it costs me literally nothing in fuel.
