Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Rugged and tough off-road	Clumsy and noisy on the road
Five-door versions are roomy and practical	Thirsty engine and high emissions
Well-proven mechanical components	Outclassed in most respects by more modern designs

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) is a traditional, body-on-frame off-roader that remains closer to the original Japanese SUV ethos than many modern rivals. Available in three- or five-door configurations with optional seven seats, it features a 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine producing 168bhp and 275lb ft of torque. Every model comes with four-wheel drive and selectable driving modes, from rear-wheel-drive high-ratio for everyday use to low-range for serious off-roading. The five-door offers a cavernous 663-litre boot and commanding driving position, though the cabin is dated and lacks the refinement of premium rivals.

The Shogun excels off-road but feels crude and heavy on tarmac, with the gruff diesel engine delivering modest performance compared to six-cylinder rivals. Fuel economy ranges from mid-20s mpg in early models to low-30s mpg in later Euro 5 versions, though towing significantly reduces this. Running costs are substantial, with high insurance groups and pre-2017 models facing steep VED charges. Multiple facelifts and trim levels provide variety, with later SG3 and above models offering parking sensors, leather seats, and reversing cameras. As a used buy, the Shogun offers excellent value without prestige badge appeal, making it an affordable choice for those needing genuine off-road capability.

Best for: Buyers seeking authentic off-road ability, those requiring genuine towing capacity, and budget-conscious purchasers wanting a spacious, practical vehicle without premium badge costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road refinement, fuel efficiency, or modern cabin design, or those seeking a plush, contemporary SUV experience.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Shogun if: You need genuine off-road capability, require substantial towing capacity, or seek a spacious, practical vehicle at an affordable price without premium badge costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road refinement, fuel efficiency, modern cabin design, or a plush, contemporary SUV experience.

Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) occupies a unique position as a traditional, no-nonsense off-roader in an increasingly car-like SUV market. Whilst rivals like the Land Rover Discovery and Kia Sorento offer superior on-road refinement and modern design, the Shogun delivers authentic off-road prowess and exceptional value. The Toyota Land Cruiser matches its off-road credentials but commands higher prices. For buyers genuinely needing four-wheel-drive capability rather than simply wanting SUV styling, the Shogun remains a sensible, affordable choice with proven mechanical durability and genuine towing capacity, despite its dated cabin and thirsty engine.
