Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged and tough off road | Clumsy and noisy on the road |
| Five-door versions are roomy and practical | Thirsty engine and high emissions |
| Well proven mechanical components | Outclassed in most respects by more modern designs |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) is a rugged, old-school 4x4 SUV, available in three or five-door versions, with the latter offering seven seats. It maintains a body-on-frame construction, signalling its serious off-road capability, powered by a 3.2-litre DI-D turbodiesel engine paired with a five-speed manual or automatic gearbox. While the five-door offers a roomy interior and an enormous 663-litre boot in five-seat configuration, the seven-seat option has limited legroom in the rearmost seats. The interior is practical and durable, though its design and finish are dated compared to more modern rivals.
On road, the Shogun feels clumsy, noisy, and unrefined, with noticeable body roll, though it excels off-road. Its 3.2-litre diesel engine, while capable of serious towing (3000-3500kg), is gruff and thirsty, with official figures ranging from 26.7mpg to 33.2mpg depending on the model. Running costs include high VED for earlier models (up to £630) and potentially expensive maintenance, though independent specialists can help. Despite its dated cabin and on-road manners, the Shogun offers good value as a used purchase, providing serious off-road capability and ample equipment, especially in later SG3 trims with parking sensors, leather, and a reversing camera.
Best for: Drivers needing serious off-road capability, those who value rugged utility over on-road refinement, buyers looking for an affordable and well-equipped used 4x4, and those who need to tow heavy loads.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising on-road comfort and refinement, those seeking a modern or premium interior, drivers concerned about fuel economy and high VED, or those who mostly drive on tarmac and don't need extreme off-road ability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Shogun | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 19.6% | 3.9/5 |

| Land Rover Discovery | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 23.0% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Shogun if: You need serious off-road capability, value rugged utility over on-road refinement, are looking for an affordable and well-equipped used 4x4, or need to tow heavy loads.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road comfort and refinement, seek a modern or premium interior, are concerned about fuel economy and high VED, or mostly drive on tarmac and don't need extreme off-road ability.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Shogun (2006-2019) stands out as a highly capable and affordable used 4x4 for those prioritising extreme off-road performance and towing ability over on-road refinement. While its dated interior, noisy 3.2-litre diesel engine, and high running costs for earlier models might deter some, its robust construction and value for money make it an excellent choice for buyers needing a utilitarian vehicle. It competes well against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser for off-road prowess, though it lags behind more modern SUVs such as the Kia Sorento and Land Rover Discovery in terms of comfort and on-road dynamics.

(12 reviews)This car is well specd, solidly designed /well built, but really good ones can be expensive
Simply a great car. Brilliant to drive, comfotable with great safety and luxury features. A really solid performer!
This is the eighth Shogun I have owned and found them very easy to drive, very comfortable and reliable. Both my wife and I are disabled and find them easy to get in and out with plenty of room in the back for my wifes disability buggy. I have owned other 4x4s but always go back to a Shogun.
Excellent car alround, with mitsubishi reliability built in, generally classed as being old school nowadays, unfortunately so in my opinion, Snapped up immediately as soon as advertised which tends to prove my point
Overpriced by £6000-6500 & only with part SH and manual
