Nissan Qashqai (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of clever tech	No plug-in hybrid
Roomy and practical cabin	Underwhelming performance of 1.3 mild hybrid
Stylish looks	High-spec cars are very pricey

Quick Summary

The Nissan Qashqai is a mid-sized family SUV that pioneered the crossover segment, blending the practicality and efficiency of a family hatchback with SUV styling and raised ride height. The third-generation model, launched in 2021 and updated in 2024-2025, represents a significant step forward with improved dynamic ability, interior quality, and technology. It offers up to 504 litres of boot space with clever variable-height storage, excellent legroom and headroom, and a commanding driving position with strong visibility. Available with mild-hybrid 1.3-litre petrol engines or an innovative E-Power full hybrid system where the petrol engine acts as a generator, the Qashqai delivers effortless, refined driving with smooth acceleration and good ride comfort.

The E-Power variant feels more like an electric car than a traditional hybrid, with immediate electric motor response and impressive refinement, achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving. Standard equipment is generous across all trims, including dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Running costs are competitive, though high-spec Tekna and Tekna+ models exceed £40,000, attracting premium vehicle tax. With strong practicality, comfort, ease of use, and excellent value for money, the Qashqai remains one of the UK's best-selling cars and an excellent all-rounder in the family SUV class.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV with modern technology, those prioritising smooth and effortless driving, and buyers interested in hybrid efficiency without plug-in charging.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting a plug-in hybrid option, those seeking thrilling performance from the lower-powered 1.3 mild hybrid, or buyers with limited budgets for high-specification models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Qashqai if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable, and well-equipped family SUV with modern technology, prioritising smooth and effortless driving, or interested in hybrid efficiency without plug-in charging.

Consider alternatives if: You want a plug-in hybrid option, seek thrilling performance from the lower-powered 1.3 mild hybrid, or have a limited budget for high-specification models.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Qashqai is a strong contender in the mid-sized family SUV market, offering excellent practicality, comfort, and technology at competitive prices. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead with higher expert and user ratings, the Qashqai matches the Volkswagen Tiguan and outperforms the Ford Kuga overall. Its innovative E-Power hybrid system, generous equipment levels, and refined driving experience make it an excellent all-rounder. However, buyers seeking maximum performance or the absolute best value should consider the Kia Sportage, whilst those prioritising deal availability might explore the Ford Kuga.
