Nissan Townstar (2023-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressively comfortable ride	EV is also pretty expensive
Decent standard equipment	EV also has low payload
Electric version is very refined	Interior colour scheme is a little dour

Quick Summary

The Nissan Townstar is a modern compact van available in two body lengths (L1 and L2) and offered with either a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine or an all-electric powertrain. The EV variant produces 119bhp with a theoretical range of 183 miles, whilst the petrol option provides greater flexibility for higher-mileage operations. Both versions feature twin side-hinged rear doors and sliding side doors as standard, with load capacities ranging from 3.3 to 4.3 cubic metres depending on specification. The Townstar is practical, well-equipped, and shares its platform with the Renault Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz Citan.

Comfort is a standout feature, with soft suspension that smooths out road imperfections whilst maintaining excellent body control. The electric version is particularly refined and quiet, making it ideal for urban deliveries. Standard equipment includes climate control, cruise control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the EV's £13,000 premium over the petrol variant, combined with modest real-world range (around 100-140 miles) and lower payload capacity, means the petrol engine may suit higher-mileage operators better. The interior colour scheme is somewhat bland, and the EV's 80kW rapid charging speed is not class-leading.

Best for: Urban delivery operators seeking a comfortable, well-equipped compact van; businesses considering an electric vehicle with manageable daily mileage; operators valuing ride comfort and comprehensive warranty coverage.

Not ideal for: High-mileage operators requiring maximum payload capacity; those seeking the lowest purchase price; buyers prioritising rapid charging speeds or premium interior aesthetics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Townstar if: You're an urban delivery operator seeking a comfortable, well-equipped compact van, considering an electric vehicle with manageable daily mileage, or valuing ride comfort and comprehensive warranty coverage.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum payload capacity, seek the lowest purchase price, or prioritise rapid charging speeds and premium interior aesthetics.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Townstar is a very competitive choice in the compact van sector, performing strongly across practicality, equipment, technology, quality and durability. Whilst it lacks the visual excitement of some rivals and the EV's payload is modest, the Townstar excels in ride comfort and warranty comprehensiveness. The Ford Transit Courier offers better value deals, but the Townstar's refined electric powertrain and comfortable suspension make it an excellent choice for operators prioritising driver comfort and modern technology. Its platform-sharing with the Renault Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz Citan ensures proven reliability and parts availability.
