Nissan X-Trail (2014-2021) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy interior with five- and seven-seat versions	Not as much fun to drive as a Mazda CX-5
Comfortable ride	DPF prone to clogging
Generous equipment, even on lower trim grades	Don't expect to chase Land Rovers off road

Quick Summary

The Nissan X-Trail (2014-2021), known as the mk3, is a family SUV that's usefully larger than earlier versions, offering the option of a third row of seats with contemporary styling. Facelifted models from September 2017 are even more appealing. The X-Trail is spacious and comfortable, with middle-row seats that split 60/40 and slide to increase boot space or legroom. The boot's false floor can be lifted and slotted vertically to form a divider, preventing smaller items from sliding around. Adults won't want to travel far in the third row, but they're perfectly fine for children.

Available with front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive transmissions, plus manual and automatic gearboxes, the X-Trail initially featured a 129bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel. A 1.6-litre 161bhp petrol turbo joined in July 2015, followed by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 169bhp in November 2016. Engine and road noise are well suppressed, with suspension calibrated for ride quality over handling. Equipment levels are generous even on lower trim grades, with plentiful electronic driver assistance aids and convenience functions. The 1.6-litre dCi turbodiesel achieves around 48mpg in everyday motoring, whilst the 2.0-litre turbodiesel manages 50.4mpg and the 1.6 petrol turbo achieves 45.6mpg. Insurance groups range from 15 to 23, lower than key rivals, and fixed-price servicing packages are available from around £17-£19 monthly.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped seven-seat SUV with optional four-wheel drive for occasional winter driving or muddy terrain.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising dynamic driving performance like a Mazda CX-5, those exclusively driving diesel models in urban environments (DPF concerns), or serious off-road adventurers.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X-Trail if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped seven-seat family SUV with optional four-wheel drive for occasional winter driving or muddy terrain.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic driving performance, exclusively drive diesel models in urban environments, or require serious off-road capability.

Competitive Position: The Nissan X-Trail (2014-2021) is an attractive, roomy, versatile, and well-equipped family workhorse with an optional seven-seat configuration. Whilst some rivals like the Mazda CX-5 offer superior dynamic performance and the Hyundai Santa Fe achieves higher user ratings, the X-Trail remains a strong contender for families valuing comfort, practicality, and generous equipment levels. Its optional four-wheel-drive system is handy for negotiating muddy terrain or staying mobile during snowy winters. If you admire the X-Trail's styling and have a nearby Nissan dealer, you're unlikely to feel short-changed.
