Nissan X-Trail Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Hugely practical	e-Power model is not as economical as you might hope
Lots of safety equipment	No plug-in hybrid option
Comfortable on long journeys

Quick Summary

The Nissan X-Trail is a quiet, comfortable and confident family SUV that majors on interior versatility and refinement. Available in both five- and seven-seat configurations, it offers an impressive 575 litres of boot space and excellent accessibility for passengers. The innovative e-Power hybrid system uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine as a generator to power electric motors, delivering smooth acceleration and impressive refinement. The optional e-4orce four-wheel-drive system adds a second electric motor for enhanced traction and stability, making it a capable choice for various driving conditions.

Safety standards are particularly impressive, with autonomous forward emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and adaptive cruise control all standard. The infotainment system is straightforward and user-friendly, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Residual values are strong, and whilst the e-Power's real-world fuel economy of 36-42mpg may not match expectations, it still compares favourably with conventional petrol alternatives. The X-Trail represents excellent value for buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped and refined family SUV.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, versatile seven-seat SUV with excellent safety features, comfort-focused drivers, and those wanting a refined hybrid powertrain with strong residual values.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum fuel economy, those requiring a plug-in hybrid option, or drivers seeking the sportiest handling in the class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X-Trail if: You're seeking a spacious, versatile seven-seat SUV with excellent safety features, prioritise comfort on long journeys, or want a refined hybrid powertrain with strong residual values.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum fuel economy, need a plug-in hybrid option, or desire the sportiest handling in the class.

Competitive Position: The Nissan X-Trail is a strong contender in the seven-seat SUV market, offering impressive practicality, comprehensive safety equipment and refined comfort. Whilst the Skoda Kodiaq edges ahead with slightly better value scores and user ratings, the X-Trail's innovative e-Power hybrid system, superior refinement and strong residual values make it an excellent choice for families. The Hyundai Santa Fe offers plug-in hybrid benefits, whilst the Peugeot 5008 provides alternative styling. However, the X-Trail's combination of space, technology and driving comfort makes it a highly sensible and capable family vehicle.
