Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressive load space and payload	Rivals are more refined and better to drive
Economical 2.2-litre diesel	Some gearbox issues with older used models
Well equipped	Electric version won't go far on a charge

Quick Summary

The Peugeot Boxer is a large van available in multiple configurations, including panel van, crew van and window van variants. Introduced in 2006 as a collaboration with Fiat and Citroën, it represents a significant improvement over its predecessor with enhanced practicality and economical HDi diesel engines. The Boxer offers impressive load space and payload capacity, with three wheelbase options and flexible body styles. It features practical touches such as 180-degree opening rear doors (with a 270-degree option available), wide side doors for pallet loading, and thoughtful interior storage including two gloveboxes and numerous cubby holes.

Current models are powered by one of two 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engines producing either 118bhp or 138bhp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Whilst the Boxer remains competitively economical with claimed averages up to 36mpg, its underlying age is apparent in its driving experience. The suspension is rough and handling lacks finesse compared to newer competitors, making longer drives tiresome. However, it remains manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility. A recently launched electric version offers a smoother, quieter drive but has limited range, making it better suited to local trips and last-mile deliveries rather than long-haul transport.

Best for: Businesses requiring large load space and payload capacity, those seeking economical diesel running costs, and operators comfortable with the Boxer's driving characteristics.

Not ideal for: Operators prioritising refined, comfortable driving experiences, those needing long-range electric capability, or buyers seeking the latest technology and handling refinement.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Boxer if: You require impressive load space and payload capacity, seek economical diesel running costs, and are comfortable with its driving characteristics and age-related refinement levels.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined, comfortable driving experiences, need long-range electric capability, or require the latest technology and handling refinement.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively economical large van with impressive load space and payload capacity. Whilst rivals such as the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Crafter are more modern, refined and better to drive, the Boxer's updates and revisions—particularly the 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines meeting modern emissions regulations—keep it in contention. Despite its age, it offers substantial load space, payload capacity, equipment and configurability. For operators happy with its driving dynamics and seeking a large van, the Boxer represents a sensible purchase option.
