Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive load space and payload | Rivals are more refined and better to drive |
| Economical 2.2-litre diesel | Some gearbox issues with older used models |
| Well equipped | Electric version won't go far on a charge |
Quick Summary
The Peugeot Boxer is a large van available in multiple configurations, including panel van, crew van and window van variants. Introduced in 2006 as a collaboration with Fiat and Citroën, it marked a significant improvement over its predecessor with enhanced practicality, economical HDi diesel engines, and modern safety equipment. The Boxer offers impressive load space and payload capacity, with three wheelbase options and flexible body styles. Rear doors open 180 degrees in the panel van, with a 270-degree option available. The cabin features two gloveboxes, numerous cubby holes, and seating for three up front with generous leg, shoulder and headroom.
Current models are powered by one of two 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engines: the base BlueHDi 120 S&S produces 118bhp and 310lb ft of torque, whilst the higher-performance BlueHDi 140 S&S outputs 138bhp and 340lb ft. Both pair with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averages 25.5-36.0mpg depending on configuration, with a 90-litre fuel tank providing approximately 495 miles per tank. The Boxer is manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility, though it lacks the refinement and handling finesse of newer competitors. A recently launched electric version offers smooth, punchy performance but limited range, making it better suited to local trips and last-mile deliveries rather than long-haul transport.
Best for: Businesses and operators requiring substantial load space and payload capacity, those seeking economical diesel running costs, and buyers wanting a well-equipped, flexible van platform.
Not ideal for: Operators prioritising refined driving dynamics, those needing long-range electric capability, or buyers seeking the latest technology and comfort features found in newer competitors.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot Boxer | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 48.8% | 4.1/5 |
| Ford Transit | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 28.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Vauxhall Movano | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.3% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxer if: You require substantial load space and payload capacity, seek economical diesel running costs, or want a well-equipped and flexible van platform for your business.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined driving dynamics, need long-range electric capability, or require the latest technology and comfort features found in newer competitors.
Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively economical option with impressive load space, payload capacity and equipment. However, newer competitors such as the Ford Transit, Vauxhall Movano and Nissan NV400 are more refined, better to drive and offer superior comfort. Despite its age, the Boxer's 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines deliver modern emissions compliance and claimed fuel economy up to 36mpg. If you're satisfied with its driving characteristics and performance, the Boxer represents a sensible purchase for businesses requiring a large van with proven practicality and configurability.

(3 reviews)Test drove this van , started up alright and then drove it up the road, however when warmed up started blowing plumes of white smoke out, this indicates that a head gasket fault is present on this van
Great drive and spacious!, compared to fiat Ducatto
Simple, uncomplicated vehicle with excellent economy. Build quality is ok, but there are better. It has most things I would want, as do it’s’non-biological triplets’, the Relay and Ducato and the Relay.
