Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive load space and payload | Rivals are more refined and better to drive |
| Economical 2.2-litre diesel | Some gearbox issues with older used models |
| Well equipped | Electric version won't go far on a charge |
Quick Summary
The Peugeot Boxer is a large van offered in multiple configurations, competing with the Volkswagen Crafter, Renault Master, Vauxhall Movano and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Introduced in 2006, it marked a significant improvement over its predecessor with enhanced practicality, on-road manners and economical HDi diesel engines. A collaborative effort with Fiat and Citroën, it shares the same platform as the Fiat Ducato and Citroën Relay. Available in crew cab, chassis cab, window van and panel van configurations with three wheelbase options, the Boxer offers impressive load space and payload capacity, ranging from 1,125kg to 1,870kg with load lengths from 2,670mm to 4,070mm. Rear doors open 180 degrees, with a 270-degree option available, whilst the wide space between wheel arches accommodates larger loads.
Current models feature one of two 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engines: the base BlueHDi 120 S&S produces 118bhp and 310lb ft of torque, whilst the BlueHDi 140 S&S outputs 138bhp and 340lb ft. Both pair with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averages 25.5-36.0mpg depending on configuration, with a 90-litre tank providing approximately 495 miles per tank. Whilst the Boxer's underlying age is apparent in its driving experience compared to newer rivals, it remains manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility. A recently launched electric version offers smoother, quieter operation and punchy acceleration, though its limited range suits local trips rather than long-haul transport. Service intervals are generous at two years or 32,000 miles for normal use, with fixed-price service plans available from £10 monthly.
Best for: Businesses requiring large load space and payload capacity, operators seeking economical diesel running costs, and those needing flexible van configurations for various applications.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising refinement and handling dynamics, those requiring long-range electric capability, or buyers seeking the latest technology and comfort features.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot Boxer | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 27.8% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Transit | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan NV400 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.6% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxer if: You require impressive load space and payload capacity, seek economical diesel running costs, or need flexible van configurations for various commercial applications.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refinement and handling dynamics, require long-range electric capability, or want the latest technology and comfort features.
Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively economical option with many versions offering claimed average fuel economy of up to 36mpg. Despite its age, it still delivers substantial load space, payload capacity, equipment, adaptability and configurability. Whilst rivals such as the Ford Transit and Vauxhall Movano are more modern, refined and better to drive, the Boxer's updates and revisions—particularly the 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines meeting modern emissions regulations—keep it in contention. If you're satisfied with its driving characteristics and performance, the Boxer represents a sensible purchase for a large van.

4 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Great drive and spacious!, compared to fiat Ducatto
Simple, uncomplicated vehicle with excellent economy. Build quality is ok, but there are better. It has most things I would want, as do it’s’non-biological triplets’, the Relay and Ducato and the Relay.
I took a certified mechanic with me. He found that signals of engine overheating. Also it builds pressure on the system and keep it even after van is cool. So something happened to that van
Great value, Great condition. Just out of my price ramge
Peugeot boxer van L3 H2 is one of the top models for converting to a camper van. It is exactly the same as the fiat deccato and the Renault. The Peugeot version has the much more reliable Peugeot engine making it the choice for reliability. The 2 litre Euro engine with the add blue means they are very economical to run and environmentally friendly enough to go through London so a big plus for anyone wanting a camper.
